valve cover question

i have iron gt 40's with 1.7 rockers. here is my situation.

when we did my heads we thought we had the rockers hitting the baffle in the passenger valve cover so we removed it. turns out the rocker was not hitting and it was the egr tube leaking  . anyway, we didnt realize no baffle meant oil would be sucked into the intake from the fillerneck(the little hose there). so we removed the hose, capped the holes, and threw a breather on there which gets moist and drips :notnice: . also the valve cover leaks where the filler neck meets it(temporarily fixed with silicon  ). so hear are my 2 questios....

1) do i need a breather or can i keep the oil cap on with no ventalation?

2)Or should i just get some fox valve covers with the baflle still in them?

I would think you should be venting that somehow...its not a closed system...
FRPP sells the M6766-N303 screw on breather that looks like a KN...

i have a breather on there now.
when it vents it makes the breather moist with oil because there is no baffle in the valve cover. and it leaks/drips all over. my freind in his 88 gt(he is a mechanic) has his vent tube removed has the oil cap on the filler neck with no ventalation, he said it is for emissions and it has no purpose. does my ranting make any sense?

Your mechanic friend is a little confused. The vent must be there to allow crankcase pressure to safely purge. If it does not have somewhere to vent you will start to blow oil pan and lower intake gaskets. It vents to the intake manifold for emissions reasons. By venting to the intake the oil vapors are burned instead of venting all those HC's to the atmosphere.

Make sure your PCV is working properly, as this is where most of the pressure is supposed to be venting. Your best bet is to use valve covers with baffles if they will clear the rockers. This way you should be able to use a breather, or be a hippie and vent to the intake. If you cannot do this then try an oil seperator setup. I think Steeda has one?

As an aside: Not all "professional" mechanics were created equally. But, I won't rant on this again.

I use fox vc's with FMS 1.6 (blue) rockers and I had to remove the baffle. The fox vc will have to be 'slightly' notched near the #1 cylinder to clear a bolt on the alternator. This is easily done with a dremel-type tool.

what abot the bolts, did you reuse the stock ones? what did you do with no baffle as far as oil being pushed up into the filler neck?. thanks, kyle

I used the stock covers with 1.7 rockers and the were hitting the bezzel sooo.... I took off the bezzel ground down the three 'pedistals' that the bezzel was screwed into then put the bezzel back on almost 1/4 inch higher then stock and after that i had the bezzel and the rockers cleared by more then enough room..... ( if you want to keep the bezzel!?!!)

Awesome solution:nice:
I will try to do this as I am rebuilding my motor now.

The bolts should be close enough to the same length that is won't matter. If not, just go to the local hardware store and pick something up.

I have a set of Cobra valve covers from my 95 cobra if you are interested. I replaced mine with custom chrome plated Cobra VC's. If you have GT40 heads and pedestal mount RR's these VC's will work great. PM me if you are interested.
