Need input for Q-Logic sub box development

Q-Logic is a division of Rockford Corporation. We are currently working on development of a Q-Custom series subwoofer enclosure for the 2005 Mustang. Q-Logic doesn't sell woofers, and this product is not available for sale. The purpose of this post is not to sell product, but to get feedback from Mustang owners about the kind of product that they would like to see for the Mustang.

Our initial idea is to use a sealed enclosure of 1 cubic foot for a single 12" woofer.

Attached are some pictures of our first round development prototype. We plan to offer a grill, but we have to develop the basic enclosure first. This enclosure would probably retail for about PRICING INFO DELETED (does not include the woofer)

The woofer shown in the picture is a Rockford fosgate P2 12S4 Retail is PRICING INFO DELETED .

I like it, but I'm also willing to give up an entire corner to a form fit. That one looks like it takes up 1/2-3/4's of the corner, use it all.

Plan to offer a grill or a grill will be included? A grills a must have for me.

It's cool that you have asked for input. We have a few vendors that hang out here and do the same. This can be very informational for the users and the vendors.

Looks great. I have a Q-Logic box in my '05 - the standard 10" box with a Rockford 10" P2 sub. It takes up more space in the corner of course than this option would and gives me a smaller sub.

IMO the standard grill that I have on my Q-Logic box would be fine for the custom box for the '05.

I like the approach alot.

I like the approach, but I have to agree that the unit would look better if it took up that whole area. It doen't mean losing thay much more room and would make for a more custom-fit look.

This is great feedback. Let me respond to a few of your comments...

This is first round prototype. The input on size and shape is very valuable. We might be able to get enough additional internal volume to do a slot vent design. We would have to get at least 1.25 cuft internal volume to make it work.

The enclosure definately needs a grill. We have to get the basic enclosure done first. Earl, that is a great idea about using the existing grill, Don't know if it will happen, but thanks!

None of this stuff is available for sale, and I couldn't sell you one regardless. This is 100% about trying to find out what the customer wants. We won't be linking to any of the corporate sites. This is about talking with you, not us selling to you. We want to hear what you have to say. I included pricing information as information only as that is usually the first question I get asked, but we will respect the site owners and not post any further pricing information.

Rockford Corp is Mustang country. We bought a GT that will become a show vehicle for Rockford Fosgate, and I personally own a Redfire GT Premium IUP 5 speed. With the permission of the site owners we might be able to put some show car build up pictures on the site.

Looks nice. Think you could build a box for 2 12"s w/o taking up to much room? That would be nice. Also, I wouldnt change this design to a ported box. Ported boxes need to be built specifically for the driver being used. Prefab ported is a nono.

I have always preferred the sound of a ported box. I went with a 10" sub and modified a stock bandpass box myself. I like not having my sub exposed to possible damage, and it also fits snugly into the space. I would agree with the others to take up the full space on the right side and make it fit perfectly!

I would like to see options available for multiple woofers, whether that be in the formm of a dual 10" (like the Mach 1000) or a second single-12 on the driver's side. Most of these cars will receive exhaust systems that are very loud, and you need extensive amounts of bass to keep up with the inherent noise-floor. Another option may be to hang it off the rear deck and use a couple of 8's or 10's. A Mustang Stealthbox doesn't HAVE to tuck into the passenger corner of the trunk.

Please don't use the stock grill. They're designed more for looks than protection. If I mount an expensive sub in the trunk where stuff is going to slide around I want a grill that will protect the sub.

Do NOT use the standard grills that come with your current Q-logic boxes. You need a grill that is more oriented towards this car.

I've got a couple 12" RF Punch Audiophiles (old school RF) waiting for this.

Yikes. That will lead to alot of cancellation. Its best to keep subs mounted on the same plain and close together.

As long as they aren't facing directly at one another, I don't think it will matter in this car. I'd like to test it, but in my '02, I got no cancellation issues having two woofers firing forward, and two firing uo through the rear deck. It worked very well, and I didn't have the spoiler rattle issue that way. BUT, it won't work in all cars (wife's Jetta sounds like nothing isd there, even though the same speakers can hit 150+ in the Stang). That's why I'd like to test it- but Ford won't build my damned car! :mad

Now that I think about it I know what I'd like. I have the shaker 1000 and love it but I would like a better quality subwoofer back there. I'm not willing to go with a whole new setup for the head unit, amps, speakers, ect. But if you made a direct replacement sub that fit a single 12" and ran it off the stock amp you'd have a sale with me. The stock amp is probably just as junky as the stock speakers but maybe it could be bridged to feed a single sub? I don't know, you're the experts-make it happen. Please!

why not replace the factory amps, with an after market amps, trust me you'll be glade you did. you don't have to remove the amps, just unhook them and use the speaker wires coming from the factory amps to go to the other amps. I did this with the shaker 500 and it sounds alot better. far as sub box I have the Scosche 12inch sub box.

To catch up a little bit on some of the questions and comments...

Adding a second sub to the other corner does result in a lot of cancelation. multiple subs need to be mounted on the same plane, in close proximity, to produce the best results, We have a limited amount of room without blocking the spare tire cover, two 12" might be too large...

It appears that Ford used four amplifiers to drive the Shaker 1000 subwoofer enclosure. I will try to get some details on the amps and what might be possible for an aftermarket solution.

For the grill we are thinking that more protection is needed. How important is it to be able to see the woofer?

With the enclosure tucking into the corner like it does, it would seem that a "stealthy" approach would be better. Besides, the best sounding subs certainly don't look the best (Adire's Shiva comes to mind). I do want multiple woofers (2-10's would make me VERY happy as I already own them ), and the extra output will be needed to get over the exhaust. I will even aid in development as much as I can- as I have done in the past for a few other products/companies. I even helped with the QL-K2010 just a bit. Well, I provided some measurements when asked.
