Question on vibration in the trans?

I just picked up a 93 lx with h/c/i and some other bolt ons. One mod the car has is a tremec 3550 trans. When I rev the car to 4500 and up to 6000 the shifter want to rattle straight out of my hands. This is the first time Ive had a mustang with vibration in relation to engine rpm. And this is my 3rd one.

Could it be a bad clutch. Would the bellhousing need to be indexed or re indexed if the person didn't do it. I thought it could be the driveshaft but vibration would get worse based on total speed and not rpm.

Anyone experience this problem. Let me know.

Dan.

Hey. i got the same problem.... it happens @ 65+ mph it vibes like a muther! it has a 90 coupe w/a 3550, it's hard to downshift to 2nd from 3rd and i know the bell housing is from a t-5. I found out that theres a different bell for the 3550's but i dont see the difference...the 3550 bolts to the t-5 bell  well sorry to jack your thread... hope someone writes about this dilema.

if it does this in neutral at a stop it could your balancer or possibly a bearing inside the transmission. if it does it only while driving it could be u-joints a tranny mount or a internal transmission problem. your best bet it to get under your car and start wiggling things.

Also another possibility is that the D/S threw a weight and is outta balance or your tires and wheels are outta balance. I would start with the balancer up front and look for rubber pushing out between the metal rings. good hunting, bad vibes are a pita!

I experience the same problems in my 95 T5 (auto-5spd swap)...when I get in the higher rpms the shifter vibrates and it isn't balancer or driveshaft related (changed out both)...on mine anyways it wasn't. It "feels" like the vib is from the tranny, almost like it doesn't "like" to be revved that high or spin that fast...you can hear it as well trying to "rev" that fast...

I'm curious to what the symptoms might be from...

This is an internal issue I'm sure of it (in my case)...I have had two different driveshafts and two different balancers and you can tell the vibe is coming thru the shifter/trans and not from somewhere else. It just doesn't sound healthy but I see no real negatives with it...

Well, I have to get my chrome moly ds cut to fit in the fox. And I have a romac balalcer from my 95 to go on. While the trans is out however Im going to index the bellhousing. Im putting my tko600 in. Ive heard that all of these things can be replaced and it comes down to indexing the bellhousing.

The indexing doesn't refer to the t5's right? I think that is just for ya'll rich few that get to have a different tranny like the TK500;)

On "ours" we have bellhousing alignment dowels that allow us to find the centerline...

Actually every 5-speed trans uses the same dowels. And the stock ones can be off. Thats why its always a good idea to check wihle your in there. Only takes a few minutes.

I didn't know that...I just always seen it referred to on those different trannies...thanks for the correction :nice: I'll do that next time...

You are killing your exhaust

I have a 90lx notchbk and I was having the exact same vibration. I disconnected the driveshaft and ran it in gear and the vibration was still there. It wasn't there when I pushed in the clutch while parked so it had to be a tranny vibe. It came on without waring too, just one day on the hwy it started shaking like a stripper with student loans.

I thought I was just ruining my tranny, but without warning one day, my H-pipe split open from the vibration stress with razer sharp freyed edges (this is not just rusty exhaust coming apart, it was shiny and new). Bolts backed all the way out, my starter came off one day, I even crushed a motor mount.

It is vital to stop running the car and get that tranny out of there. Still don't know what it was...

So I put on the tko600 and romac harmonic balancer. The bellhousing on the trans was indexed. I have a new chrome moly drive shaft. And this car still vibrates in the 3500 to 4500 range and sort of smooths out up to 6000 rpm. And its only rpm related. In gear or in neutral.

Silverfoxbody. You said it could be the flywheel. My flywheel from my 95 mustang is now in my lx. It was fine when stock. But when I had a new clutch put in my 95 I had terible vibration right after the clutch job. Does recutting a flywheel throw off the balance of it. And where can you take it to get it balanced. Or is it a good idea to just buy a new one.
