Well I went to the track with my car. First time for me and for my car ever to a drag strip. Well I drove it 1 hour going about 80ish the whole way and had no problems what so ever. Got to the track and signed in got my number and immediatly got in line. Hind sight I should have let everything cool off first as this is when everything went down hill. Went and staged, bundle of nerves of course being my first time, no burn out just go down the track. Well I take off first is fine but I have to let up to get it into second...hmmmm. Get my slip a terrible 1.5 reaction and 15.7 at 91 mph. Ok I'm thinking first time no biggie. Second time up I use the line lock, still no burn out, pleanty more night left right, get a .44 reaction time, still can't get it into second right 15.4, at 97 mph. Still terrible. I go to get inline again and put it into first and it slams in. So I'm thinking hmmm what happened there? Well I pull into the pits and me a buddy look around the car and can't find anything so I go back in line. I do a burn out this time, peg leg still don't have the new posi in yet, line lock to 2500k and take off....about 10 feet. My fan jumped up and cut my radiator hose up by the radiator. Luckily I could cut the hose and stretch it a little and make it work, with no fan. So I park it in the pits and go watch the races as my night is pretty much done. On the way home I notice a vibration, on and off about every 2 seconds around 60 mph. I think my little 4 banger tranny is about done, it was going out anyway....what a night.

On a good note I did get to see a 93 stang stand straight up useing a shot of nose off line, and when I mean straight up I mean rocket shipped up! He let out of it to quick and slammed down and he limped back to his trailer.

So I guess I'll be rebuilding my t 5 with world class parts to last until I can afford a g force :(

Sounds like a good night to me. Don't be hard on yourself, it was your first time out. I think you knew the trans was temporary. Beef it up, get your motor tied down, and a posi then you'll be set.

I have a traction lock 9 inch with 4.11 gears sitting the garage awaiting to go in but we made a last second choice to go friday night and we just wanted to see what she would do as is. All in all I guess it wasn't real bad, I was able to make it home.

All in all I'm hopeing its a 13 second car when I put the track lok 9 and 4.11s in there. 12seconds next year with heads.

Where can I get good motor mounts? This is a street car so I don't THINK I want solid mounts.

sounds like you might need a new motor mount, maybe even a turnbuckle to hold that 302 down!
Ya beat me to it!

No way you should/could cut the hose if the driver's mount wasn't broken. While you are replacing it get one of those aftermarket mounts (not the overpriced TCP ones) that have come out recently. They are nearly a solid but have some rubber sandwiched in there for SOME dampening. You could use a strap like 12sec said but they look out of place on non-race cars in my opinion.

i recently look the plunge and bought a set up tcp motor mounts. one of the best mods i've done next to the 5 speed conversion. everything just feels so tight and solid now and i definitely dont have to worry about breaking anything except maybe my rear end. haha .. they take a few days to break in, but once theyre broken in they have a nice solid, smooth feel.

by the way, the tcp motor mounts DO have a polyurethane bushing so there IS a good amount of dampening, which is why theyre good for the street and track because they dont vibrate the living daylights out of you.

also I don't think I mentioned this but it was a 17 inch fan could that be to big? I never had a problem with it until the track though.

Edbert, where would I find the mounts your talking about?

possibly, but you can check the clearance you have at rest and see where its at. I personally think you lost a motor mount somewhere.

Definately check out the driver side motor mount. My 302 rocks in the engine bay pretty good as well. I will add a limiting strap soon.
You shouldn't be too dissapointed in your performance since you did run 97 mph. Get your tranny fixed and you should have low 14's no problem. Many have run in the 13's at 97mph. I ran a 13.91 at 100 last year.

Dang, I have searched the net and cannot find those mounts. Has anyone else seen them? I am not going crazy am I? Don't answer that!

I'm gonna dig through a stack of old magazines and search the ads. I recall vividly a picture, was it a dream?

Make sure you accompany your new rear with a set of slicks.......Ya I hate it when i rush things, drive out of town, and mess something up. I just keep thinking the rest of the day, man I should have waited :( In the end though, once you get everything squared away, you should be rewarded with a very nice et.

right now I'm gonna run drag radials until I can get my set of 17s hopsters with street tires.

I think I can run a lot faster than 97 if I could have gotten it to go into second when I wanted it to.

I tore the 8 inch out last night but realized I needed diffrent u bolts and the local parts store only had 2 and it was gettting late. I'll get the 9 inch in tonight, and then get the brakes set up on it.

I called around and they can't rebuild my 4banger t 5 with wc parts as something in side won't work with the gears. So I'm going to have to buy either a new WC one or try to find one in a junk yard and hope I don't get screwed again.

They look stock to me, according to the marketing blurb they are tougher but they were not what I remember seeing. Stock mounts run abour $30, and the TCPs are $200, I recall seeing some for about $100.

Digging a little more I found these:

THOSE are what I remember! See where the mounts is completely wrapped with steel? It is on my wish list now, next time I place an order (a monthly ritual it seems) I'll snag a set. I love TCP and what they've done, I even have their rack and pinion but their prices are simply insane.

i put a set of those poly mounts that Edbert mentioned on my 90 Mustang. was very pleased with them.

steel1212, you know that reaction time has no bearing on your ET, right?

if you give us 60ft times, that'll help us see how much trouble you're having off the line (a lot i imagine).

That doesnt sound right to me. As far as I know, the only difference between a 4cyl T-5 and a V8 was the 3.35(?) first gear (V8 had a ~2.95). Thats why they break more easily behind a V8; more torque multiplication is applied to the internals. You need to find out just why it cant be upgraded. Although, even with the WC, I wouldnt expect it to last forever with hard slick launches. Keeping a mild organic clutch with a sprung hub will help, though. Look into a scattershield too.

Those Prothane engine mounts look alot like latemodel 'vert mounts. I have some convertible mounts in my '89 and they have less rubber with a retaining plate to keep them from totally failing. The stock pieces literally fell off when I pulled the engine.
