Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

Well Ford fixed my Tranny with 48K miles on it. I had made complaints about the tranny at 5K and 10K, and it was documented. Since I had an extended warranty it only cost me $50.

The car drives 100% better. I used to have a tight clutch and now the clutch is a lot easier to push in, the gears shift smooth again! :hail2: I can almost say they shift smother then when I bought it new.

What gets me is that I see the list of parts that people have got put in, and the list of parts on the TSB, but yet the list on my invoice is not that extensive. They did mention an "upgrade kit" do you think that this "kit" is the TSB parts?

chris 02 gt stuck with the same tranny problems as everyone else, mine even kicked itself out of 4th the other day, never likes to go into 3rd,, and have gotten some 2nd gear grinds, unfortunately mine is 2000 miles over warranty,

i need help!

i have had my 01 cobra for 3 months now. i had tranny issues from about the second week that i owned the car. i tried the change the fluid fix and i thought it work. the car was shifting fine until this past week. it is very hard to shift but it comes and goes. sometimes its like brand new, nice and smooth and other times it is almost impossible to shift. there is no grinding but rather it feels like somthing is blocking it. i drove the car early this morning and was having problems. then i drove it again about 4 hours later and it was fine. i cant figure it out. the car is out of warranty so i dont qualify for the tsb but im not sure if that is even the problem. someone help me please, in goin crazy!!!!!!!!!!!

<does the Ace Ventura "Yes, yes, oh yeah!! Can you feel that, honey? Uh, uh, uh? I have exorcised the demons! This house is clear." dance>

The dealer examined my 02 GT this morning and will be servicing the transmission on Tuesday or next week installing the "synchro kit".

Surprisingly, they're servicing the trans at the dealer rather than just swapping in a reconditioned unit fixed at Tremec (or whereever...) I'dve thunk they'd take notchy boxes out, send them to a reconditioner and just put a previously fixed one in its place, saving headaches at the dealer.

I hope their trans guy knows what he's doing. Looking at the shop manual for the 3650 shows lots of opportunities to have spare parts left over...

My car started a 'knocking' sound in all gears except 5th. with less than 500 miles. The dealer told me it was an 'exhaust' noise, not a problem. After 2500 miles, they finally agreed that the noise was not a normal noise and did the tsb repair, even though that was not the complaint. Naturally, the noise is still there. The dealer has told me they have ordered a new tranny and will install it this week.

Hope this fixes the problem!

My 02 GT is @ the dealer right now for the 3650 issue. I have tried to get them to fix it before and they declined. I previously mentioned the TSB and they said they didn't know of one. I found the TSB and printed it out just in case when I went back to the dealer for the 3rd time. They then agreed to fix it no questions asked

My car is also in for the following:
Throw out bearing (very loud when dis-engaged)
Power Windows -Both sides ( loud sqeak and scratched my tint)
Rear Deck Sqeak
Positrack is out
Steering has knock when turned

:notnice:

Got my car back and it's shifting great. The 1st day or so was a little stiff, but it loosened up. My windows still squeak :bang:

Just want to post my experience on the what oil to use..... Since the TSB done on the tranny, i decided to install some RedLine D4 ATF into the tranny. Found that the shifting was notchy. No gear grind but just notchy. Made couple of hundreds of mile with the Redline and decided to put some DextronIII/Mercon ATF oil in it. Man, just by putting the car in reverse to get out of my garage was ennough to see the difference. The shifting has increadibly improved.

I have also been told that the 3650 doesnt like the synthetic oil because of the synchro that are made with brass and that the synthetic doesnt go well with brass. (not sure about brass.. maybe copper.. anyway the metal that the synchro are made of is not compatible with synthetic oil)

Hey Psnous, im the guy in kc with the yellow 01cobra conv. so i should just get the rebuit kit cause if its not much cheaper than a new t3650 i might just get a new one. Do you have any suggestions on were to get labor done.

Got my car back and I never realized how bad it was until I drove it when I got it back. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Smooth as butter now...

Of course when I got it back I had greasy fingerprints all over my console, seats, doors, windows. Not to mention the large scuff in the paint on the lower rear bumper or the small scuff in the door. I f'in hit the roof when I saw that. If anyone is in the Albany NY area - DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ORANGE FORD!!! They have no respect for your vehicle...

When I got mine back, my exhaust pipes are now off to the left and down. They had to remove a portion of the exhaust to do the tsb repair ... said they didn't mess up my exhaust ... but I KNOW it wasn't like that when I took it in. You can see it plain as day when you look at the back of my car. They told me that if it wasn't an aftermarket exhaust that they would have completely replaced the entire exhaust if it looked like that when they were done, but they swear they didn't mess mine up. I am soooo mad, but I don't want to go back to the shop that did my exhaust to get it fixed until I know the transmission is okay. I'm going to wait until it gets cold again to see if I get the same grind back. This was Ted Britt Ford in Chantilly.

I live in a Southern State

It's not just happening to you all that live in cold states. I live in L.A.which is almost always warm and I have the 1-2 grind as well. I have a '02 GT with 37,000 miles and have had this problem for most all of them. You should always put it in 1st before R, or you WILL grind there, but the 1-2 is bad and the other day at high RPM it wouldn't go into 3rd at all. Will replacing the shifter help at all???

I have missed 3rd even with my Pro 5.0 at higher rpm's. Mid rpm and mildly aggressive shifting are OK, but under rapid conditions my pony does not like 3rd....

After my 2nd replacement trany I think they finally got it !   I will know for sure this fall and winter. Im keeping my fingers crossed. So far it feels better even in the warm weather.

I was one of the first people to get the original TSB and it did not work for me. I have just learned the tech that had performed the tsb on my GT, did one on a mach 1 a while back and he told me there were more parts usedto fix the mach 1 than what was used to try to fix mine the first time. so maybe I just finally got a transmission with all the updated parts inside. If anyone gets a replacement trany make sure you get one with a build date in 2005.

Good luck all. :flag:
