Rented a V6 this weekend

Had to go to a funeral this weekend, so I had the opportunity to rent a V6 2005 Mustang from Hertz. Had only 550 miles on it, and was built 4/05. Let me preface this by saying that I have owned a 1995 and 1999 GT, as well as a 2001 Cobra. I currently have a 2002 Z28 A4, but am still considering a 2005/06 GT :)

At 700 feet elevation (compared to 5,280 where I live), I found the V6 to be pretty adequate. It was powerful, and sounded pretty good for a V6. Even though the 2005 Mustang and my Camaro both weigh about the same, the Mustang feels much lighter than the Camaro. The Mustang definitely handles better, rides better, and stops better (less nose dive). Generally speaking I really liked the car.

On the down side, I did find the driver's legroom to be a bit cramped, especially for my right leg. I also found myself kicking the door speaker every time I got in and out of the car. I was also very disappointed when I went to fill it up with gas from the 1/4 tank mark - it was almost impossible to put gas in this car. After about 3 gallons, the auto-shutoff constantly was going off. It was really embarassing hearing "click", "click" while standing there attempting to fill the car. My sister was giving me crap about not being able to put gas in a car. I finally remembered one of the tricks posted here about turning the fill handle upside down, and that got me to full (and then some as it splashed out and all over the side of the car). Why is a Mustang built in April still not able to be filled up?

My biggest dissapointment with the car however was the mileage. I drove it 225 miles (and much of this was highway miles, or back country roads at a steady 60 MPH) and it only got 19.3 MPG. While it may have been a tad shy of full when I got it from Hertz, the needle was pegged on "F" for quite a while when I started my trip, so I think it was pretty close. How is it with mostly highway driving this car can't crack 20 MPG with a V6? Christ, my Z28 with a 5.7L V8 and an auto transmission gets 22 MPG very reliably with 50/50 city/highway driving, and if I had driven it under the same conditions as the Mustang it would have hit 24-25 MPG.

Anyway, I am still seriously considering a GT, but I cannot believe that as of April Ford is still sending these cars out with defective gas tanks. I would also have to assume that the GT would get even worse mileage than the V6 (probably not by much though).

I may wait for the 2006, hoping that they at least get the gas tank situation figured out.

Glad you were able to give the Mustang a chance during your drive. It looks like you had a enjoyable experience except for some of your problems.

How tall are you? I am 6'1" and don't have any problems with room in the Mustang. I actually move the seat forward some to get good position to the wheel. In my 1995, I have to move it all the way back and even then its tight. I only kick the scuff plate getting in sometimes. I think this is common to all Mustangs though. I think this car is a lot more roomy then the S95 series.

My car was a late April build and I haven't experienced any of the other problems that other people seem to be having.

On gas mileage, mine has been as low as 14 mpg or as high as 22 mpg. It all depends on gravity and the weight of your foot.

If your a little hesitate, wait until the 06's come out. This way you won't pay sticker or above and you should get a car that has seen a year of QA.

I'm 6 feet tall. What I was referring to was the left side of the center console (where the radio is). It seems to protrude awfully far into the area where your right leg sits. It's not a deal killer, but it does seem awfully tight for my right leg.

By comparison, there's a lot more room for my right leg in my Z28 than there is in the Mustang.

about the gas tank thing.... this is weird... there are a couple gas stations around my area that my GT will not take gas from... seriously, it would stop every minute when i'm pumping gas.. i thought..great i got the gas tank problem.. but no when i change gas station (across the street)..nothing at all, the gas filled up just fine. My friend said it's the way the gas nozzle fit around the gas tank... who knows.. thats my 2 cents.

"Ive heard" that if the gas station is low on fuel it will make it click like that when your trying to fill up. Probably not true, I just like spreading romurs

As the person above said, it just depends. There are some pumps that wont work and some that do. I was having problems with one pump, drove to the one on the other side and it worked fine.

My V6 has about 2500 miles and I'm getting a tad over 19mpg...

jfischer, how much did it cost for you to rent the Mustang, anyway, if you don't mind me asking? I wonder if a standard would even be available to rent. Probably not, huh?

$25.99 a day + tax, ended up at about $32/day with all fees. I doubt Hertz rents anything with a stick shift, and same goes for most all other rental places.

You might find a specialty rental place to get a GT with a stick (my local Stealership is renting auto GTs at least, but they want $120/day). :notnice:

jfischer,

In answer to the MPG, it is also the nature of the beast. The engine is a 4.0L, same engine platform as the Explorer and the Ranger. Fuel management with the EEC-V and PCM Auto takes time to seat and since this is an "adaptive" PCM it is continually changing. Unfortunately, being a rental, the poor little guy never has time to complete its adaptive aspect in the PCM, hence the less than incredible gas mileage.

The V-6 is still a great car. The 5 speed auto is a far cry better than the 4 speed auto and the larger liter engine is adequate for producing good torque more than it does horsepower at the rear wheels.

In my GT, mostly highway driving at about 80 - 85 mph, with occasional trips into triple digits I get around 22.6mpg. You cant really judge a car based on rental expeirence lets face it most people beat the hell out of them.

True, but this car only had 550 miles on it when I rented it, not too much opportunity to get beat on or abused. 20 MPG out of a V6 with the majority being highway cruising at <65MPH is pretty sad.

Sad or true..Refer to my point on large liter engine and adaptive PCM. I have to actually disagree with your stance on the low mileage. That is a hinderance with the adaptive PCM.

If the gas mileage was a disappointment, then the GT will not make you happy either. You may want a WRX.
