The starter in my 92' is/has taken a crap and I have to tap it with a hammer to get it to turn over most of the time now. I bought a Motorsport "Mini" starter but then read that it does not work with a 164 tooth manual tranny and you must relocate the solinoid to the firewall? What would be the purpose of moving the soiloniod???

Any suggestions on which starter to buy or just go get a stock replacement?

thanks guys

Personally I just take them to a local alternator and starter shop and have them rebuild it.. Usually runs about 60 bucks but I know what I got when I'm done. Often he'll rebuild it while I wait.

Your T5 is a 157 tooth, the 164 tooth manual is only used in older cars with toploaders. What FMS means, is that u have to retain the starter solenoid that u already have. Some people have tried to install it thinking it was like a GM starter, and no external solenoid was required.

the new starter does not have a solenoid piggybacked on itself? Some of the high torque minis do so one swaps a wire around on the oem solenoid and runs the trigger to the new solenoid.

if not, i like 95GT's idea (just wanted to confirm that part).

good luck.

thanks 95

anyone have any experiance with this starter? any problems using my stock wiring becasue what they gave me is WAY WAY too short, what they supplied is only about 3' hardly enough to stretch around the motor then up to the silonoid on the drivers side fender well
