Im looking for a new distributor but i dont want to spend like 200 dollars right now on a msd. So what distributors can i use. I need one that has a iron gear because i am useing a 92 roller motor. Would a distributor form a 87-92 mustang work? Does it have vacuum advance on it? Or is there any better stock distributors that you guys would recomend?
Thanks
Pat

Pat, I believe the 87/92 would be one of the two TFI type. No centrifigul or vacuum advance. Set the timing where you want it and thats it, too much timing and she might be hard to start.

I've had my fill of MSD billet distributors and 6AL boxes. I think they're complete pieces of crap.
Next up, building a stock-type Ford elect. distributor with vac and mech. advance for performance and run a stock box with it.
All that red crap is getting thrown in the dumpster, or maybe given to an enemy as a gift.

You could just change the gear on the one you have! MSD p/n85833 or SVO I mean.... Ford Motorsport.... I mean Ford Racing...P/N M-12390B Proffesional Products has a kool distributor that I would go for if I were to do it all again. (I have the MSD billit/MSD 6 Box combo). The distributor fits a small block Ford , but is a GM H.E.I. Forgive me but H.E.I is one of the few things the General got right. Back in my parts slingin' days I sold a few to customers and they worked out really well. They are dirt cheap and self contained (no box required). I will search the net for a link now. Ford could not build a decent ignition system if they tried, and they did Duraspark, Duraspark II, Duraspark III, :D The MSD distributor is great, the MSD 6 box is to as long as you don't fart near it :D The 6A box does not like battery chargers or jumper cables. I have had no trouble since I put the battery disconect switch in my car. If you are going even look at the battery or do anything to the battery you disconect it from the car and the 6A/6AL box lives to see another day! :D

Unless you've changed a pressed fit, roll-pin secured distributor drive gear before, you don't know what aggravation is. Press it on while keeping the holes in alignment.. ARGH.

The MSD box is pretty damn sensitive to any electrical charge, and the MSD distributor internals corrode like crazy after a couple winters of the car being stored outside. I was wondering why my car was running like crap this year, I pulled the distributor, and huh, the advance plate had seized to the shaft, and was no longer advancing anything but the blood pressure in my skull.

Thanks everyone for the help. I know how much of a pain it is to get those dahm gears on and off the distributor. Ive done it before. my distributor has seen better days so im trying to find a brand new one. That Hei distributor sounds interesting. Do you have anymore information on it. I tryed the website but it was very vauge.
Thanks
Pat

I'm interested in that H.E.I. setup also. I like self-contained units like that, it helps clean up the engine bay nicely. I was also considering a mag, but they're a lot of moola-shmoola.

p.s. man, I don't know if I'll ever hear the end of the taunting from my friends over a GM-looking part on my 'Stang.

For $50.00 you can get one at O'Reilly or Advance Auto parts store. They are just like the stock unit but they have the steel gear. The part # is 30-2831 and are made by Cardone. Also DUI makes one like the HEI and it cost around $300.00.

The proform unit is just like the DUI one but way cheaper. The Proform unit is basically just a GM HEI that fits into a small block Ford. I would check with your local speed shop they likely have the proform catalog that you could read the blurb from. The Mach gets stored in an un-heated garage, purhaps I don't want to look under the cap? :D
