Well as you can tell from the sig I lost my love and joy a little over a month ago now. I am in my 2000 Explorer and love it but now I want to look for something to work on the side. My dream buildup if you will. I already did the 65 hardtop thing and it had only 6 cylinders which was way short in my mind. I want ideas on which car to look for as a rolling chassis right now so I can get it all ready in the amount of time I want and as cash becomes available. Then do it right, 347 Stroker, Power everything, even as detailed as to get everything new from the disc brakes up. It might take ten years but hey, why not start now? So, which car do I want to start with?

65-66 Fastback (there was no 64 fastback). There are more parts available for 64-66 Mustangs than any other, and the pricing is better on them. They are simple to work on and attract the most attention! There is nothing like an original.

since you asked ....

agree, what ever floats your boat -- but since you asked (and obviously I have a bias :) ) .... the 67-68 FB matures the design and looks of the earlier versions, but doesn't have the extra pounds that age seems to bring on (I'm sure that'll stir up some discussion) ... plus you can get into BBs if you want to flex some heavy muscle .... besides, the King of Cool (aka Steve McQueen) drove what again in Bullitt?? .... but I'm biased .... my first car right out of college (circa 1970) and still driving .... (97K original miles -- lots of garage time)

It depends what you want? 69 Fastback is an excellent option be prepared to pay a lot more for parts on that. I think they look the best plan on building an corner carver that will take after the old T/A cars that pirelli jones drove so I will be probably going with a 1970 fastback as opposed to a 66 coupe I had planned because of the wider wheelbase I feel I can get better cornering out of it. It all comes down to what you want and what you want to do with it.

Well i believe I want to look for the 69. But what is the difference in the Grande and a 69 FB?

And to the above comment on the 64, I was probably wrong but I thought I saw a few in the Mustangs and Fords magazine where it said very few 64 1/2 FBs were produced as tests before they began production in 65.....

All 64 1/2's were either coupes or convertibles, the fastback production did not begin until later, the start of the true 65's.

The 69 Grande was the first "luxury appointed" Mustang. They had special upgraded interiors and Vinyl Tops. They were all Coupes. You could still get a standard coupe or convertible as well as the fastback, but the Grande was a special edition coupe. The fastback was the most popular of the 69 model year, and it was the first year of the Mach 1 production.

While my absolute dream-car is the '67FB (followed by the '69FB); I wouldn't pass up a 67 hardtop in good shape You can put the "wire wheel" hubcaps on a vinyl-topped model to make a luxury pony-car; or you can go hog-wild and build a Terlingua car :nice: And, since the factory shoved a 390 (Shelby did 428 Police Interceptors in '67) under the hood; a "peppy" little 393W would be pretty sweet.

Hmmmmmm, a snarl-y 393W lurking in an HT coupe, with all the luxury goodies including vinyl roof and the wire-basket wheel covers. Looks like the quintessential "Secretary's Car" - unless you're looking at the tailights very quickly getting smaller as it's walking away from you :D

After seein the overwhelming selections of 69's available in my area (0) i decided that if a 65-67 coupe or fastback would do just as well, so if I can't get the 69 i will most likely have a fastback between those years soon

I know this sounds pretty sacriligeous; but I'm almost "65'd out". While nobody in their right mind would forget that the '65-66 Mustang started the whole Pony-car mentality; it seems everybody would campaign one, given the chance. Don't get me wrong, but I still think the 67-68 body better defines the breed. I wish I could remember who first posted this thought, but I can remember their quote: "The 65-66 body style says 'Hello!' The '67-68 says 'Get the H@!! out of my way!' "
I like that metaphor. :nice:
