Gear Install Price

I wanna buy 3.73 gears for my car. i can get the gears but i wanna know what a good price to pay for the rebuild kit and install of the gears so i dont get ripped off. So what did u guys pay?

its a good idea for the rebuild kit. it includes new bearings, and shims, for like 100 bucks. some places charger more, some plases charge less for the install. are you gonna be takeing the rear end out and takeing it to the shop? if you are i could see anywhere from 150-250.
i paid 150.

The average gear install takes between 2-4hrs. Depending on who's doing it, how good of a job they do, and how much stuff they have to replace. The new gears should come with a new pinion gear, ring gear, crush sleeve, and pinion nut. The only other thing that might "need" replaced is the axle bearings if they are badly worn or in bad shape. As the other guys said above though, its not a bad idea just to do a full install kit, which comes will all the new bearings and shims that you need. I got my install kit for around 100 dollars from Randy Stinchcomb at Liberty Ford out of Maryland. You can contact him at www.modulardepot.com under the forums section. They have a portion called "Ford parts". Thats where you'll find him. Talk to him if you wish and he'll hook you up with what you need.

most places can get you out the door for $400 to $500, and that includes all parts (including the gears) plus the install, etc.

I paid 580 for installation. That's WAY too much. If you look hard enough, you can find a place that'll do it for $200-$300.

remember he is in CA, so the install price will be a lot higher. the average shop rate here is from $80-130 an hour. look at about $500-$700 in labor plus another $300 in parts and fluid.

500-700 in labor in cali? thats way too high, the highest I was quoted was 450, and I must of called 15 shops. the lowest was $190 but that guy couldn't get me in for another week, and I couldn't wait any longer to get the gears in. most rear-end shops should be able to do the install in about 2 hours, if they say it will take longer I wouldn't let them touch my car, because they obviously don't know what they are doing. the shop that did my gears had it done in about 1 1/2 hours.

well thats what friends have paid for work in the santa barbara area. ive had some friends pay over $1000 for a gear install.

Should i get 3.73's or 4.10's

I have 4.30's and drive the highway. Not bad. I still get better than 20mpg on the open highway. Then again, I have an automatic and a 01 GT. Not a 98 GT with a five speed transmission. If you still have the stock heads, I'de go with 3.73's. Nothing more. If you plan on doing the P.I. head swap in the future, then 4.10's is what I'de suggest.
