I have too much crap on my compuer so when I went to start it up nothing would load up right (windows ME) I get a message saying I went over on memory and to go into DOS mode and type "scanreg /fix". When I go into dos and type that I get a "bad command" What can I do? Im using my friends computer right now to try and find help so Ill be checking back all day.

PS to broke to get it fixed or get a new one.

Thanks

Windows ME is the worst MS operating system ever.

Can you still get to the desktop? If not, can you get to safe mode? You need to run "msconfig" from the start->run command line. There you can disable anything that runs at startup. If you disable something, but it comes back after you restart, then it's probably a virus/spyware.

I cant even get into my desktop, it starts the desktop and freezes the second it loads. I have run the computer in safe mode and it does the same thing still..... what does that mean? So I can go into DOS and type "msconfig"? Do I need to type run or anything in front of it? I appreciate the help

Windows ME can't boot into DOS without a boot disk. If it won't go into safe mode, then you might have other problems. However you're getting into DOS, try running "scandisk" from there.

No, msconfig won't run in DOS.

Yea I have a recover cd that has a DOS option..... so I just go into dos and type scandisk? When I start up my computer (since I cant shut it down properly) It runs a scandisk before the desktop loads up. The scandisk doesnt show any problems but I dont know if it would. I think I jjst need to get into there somehow and delete a bunch of crap to make room. How could I do that?

OK, so it loads windows, runs scandisk, then freezes up right after it gets to the desktop? And it does the same thing in safe mode?

So are you out of hard drive space? Or running out memory from too much crap loading with the computer?

Exactly :flag:
I think my problem is I have been getting mroe and more pop ups lately, along with the fact that I just got limewire and have bombarded my computer with songs (its an old HP pentium 3, 800mhz) and I think theres just too much crap. During previous normal startups there were mabye 2 or 3 non essential things that loaded up during startup but they never caused anything like this before. It was like one day It was normal (with the exception of pop ups) and I was downlaoding some music and surfing the web, shut it down and the next day this happens. Also the monitor is all messed up, as in everything is like pixelated......

It sounds like you've been overrun with spyware. To run scanreg, boot into dos, switch to the c: drive("c:"-enter), type in "cd windows\command"-enter, then type "scanreg /fix". You should choose the closest date to go from, as long as it was working on that date. Let me know this helps.

Thanks Im going to run home right now and try it... so I type
"c:" then hit enter
"cdwindows\command" then enter
"scanreg /fix" enter

right? Sorry im not too smooth in DOS

Sorry for the late reply, I got a little busy there. Everything looks right except you need a space in the "cd windows\command".
Im not 100% that's where it's at in ME, but it's there for 98.

If you're having problems with that, type "cd \", which should put you back at the c:\ directory. If you type in "dir scanreg.exe /s" from the c:\ directory, that will search the system for scanreg. Then "cd directorywhereitsat" and run scanreg from there.

It worked .... who should I make the check out to lol. Now I have to figure out how to get my wireless working again becuase I guess during all this commotion the driver for the wireless was erased......
thanks again man

Yeah, scanreg sets you back to a previous date, so anything installed after that date will not work right.

BTW, I suggest downloading ad-aware and spybot search & destroy to remove the pop-ups/spyware. You can get them at www.download.com. They're listed in the top 10 downloads at the bottom of the main page.
