got some 4:10's the other day off of ebay. I thought I was buying FRPP's but when i finally got the package they turned out to be Motives. I didn't think that was going to be a problem though until a buddy and I tried to put them in last night. I've never put gears in before, but he's put gears into several cars (mostly fox bodied mustangs). At first the hardest part of the install was pulling out the c-clips in order to pull the axles out. It must have taken us well over 2 hours just to fish those suckers out. In the end though, we couldn't get the Motives to install properly. I think we tried pretty much everything, including counting the teeth to make sure they were what we thought they were. So today my buddy remembered he was holding on to some FRPP's for a friend and decided to see if those would work in my car, and whadya know... they do. Problem now is, i got some gear whine. Not real bad, but deffinantly noticable. So... i don't know if i'm bummed about that or happy to have the 4:10's finally in my car. There's deffinantly a thrust in power, but i'm kinda surprised it's not as noticable until you really punch it. I've also noticed that you can almost feel the gears spinning and grabbing a little as you're driving, which isn't something i'm used to. My only other concern besides the gear whine is something that sounds like a metallic rattle of some sort. I can only hear it from inside the car when i'm driving besides a wall or a building so i get an echo. this rattle may have started before i put the gears on, but it wasn't very noticable, and now that i'm paying attention to the gear whine i seem to hear it better, but then again, it could have started when the gears were installed (not much help, am i). any suggestions?

As for the gear whine, you will need to take the gears out and re-shim them. Then you should be fine. If they are shimmed correctly there should be no whining.

And the rattle...your bearings may need to be replace. Either your axel or carrier bearings or both. I had a 98GT auto with 4.10s and my bearings went bad right after the install. I personally didn't feel a difference with the gears in my auto

not tryin to be rude, but it took your buddy who's installed tons of gears in 8.8's, 2 hrs to get the c clips out???? thats a 30 second job.
as for the whining, thats probally your pinion being loose. especially if you can kinda feel the gear.

ive installed gears halfassed in a few rear ends, and honestly, i use nothing but frp gears. 4 readends, and two of them whined.

by saying halfassed i mean, new crush sleeve, and same stock shims.

the two that whined, and kinda felt loose needed the pinion to be tightened.
if it whines, i would say 1 out of 8 times, its gonna be a loose pinion. and if theres exissive play, thats your backlash(ring gear needs to be moved over.)

if theres grinnding, id say your backlash is too tight.
best fix.....
get them installed by a pro, not someone that take two hrs for some c clis.

hehe, well thanks for the advice. I do appreciate it, and will absolutely look into it. Yeah, about the c clips, it was driving my friend nuts too. Apparently he's never had a problem getting the c clips out before... they usually just about fall out, but for some reason mine were really in there (i couldn't budge them out either). I did a check on the forum to see if anyone else has ever had a problem sliding them off and from what i could find, at least one other persons had the same problem  don't know.
