Actual results? 3.73 vs 4.10

I'm looking to purchase some gears very soon. I'm debating between the 3.73's and the 4.10's.

Does anyone have any ACTUAL results in terms of 1/4 or 1/8 mile run where they have switched to 4.10's from 3.73 or vise versa?

Everyone always says "the 4.10's are better". I know the 4.10's have the better jump and SOTP feel but I'm looking for actual results.

Cheers,
Steve

From what I hear, everyone who has the 3.73's wishes they had 4.10's..I'm not familar with the actual results from the 3.73's, but I hear 4.10's can knock a good half second off your 1/4..but *****, I say go with the 4.30's :D

Had 3.73's and ran a 14.019 at Commerce, GA Switched to 4.10's (rearend messed up) and ran a 14.017 at Commerce, GA. Both on street tires (18X10" rears with 285/35/18) That being said, I found it more difficult to get it out out of the box without spinning with the 4.10 and my 60' suffered by a bit more than a tenth. For *****s and giggles, 4.10's are cool every day (lit an 05 Mustang GT up on the highway from 50 MPH) and my gas mileage is not much worse. I am sure the car would run better with some Nittos or BFG's but unless I mod this car again, my track days are over with this particular car.

If your going to go power adder then get the 373's. I had 410's when I was n/a and that was great. I put on a vortech and at the track I had to shift into 5th right before the end of the 1/4 mile at 110-112 mph. That sucked as it is very awkward (for me atleast) to shift into 5th rapidly. I went with 373's after that and could'nt be happier. I can cruise at 55 now without reving past 3k and don't have to shift into 5th anymore at the track. The wheelspin isn't as excessive anymore either. Hope this helps.

From my research For a 5sd go with 373's, auto 410's. Get a dyno tune while your at it and maybe a new shaft! Good luck. I was about to get the 373's for my 96 gt 5sd, but I ran into some hurdles, will get them soon though.

Thanks guys.

My car is SCT tuned and I'm probably going to with with nitrous in the future.

95% of the time I'm driving on the street. I make the trip to the track a couple times a year so I don't think a 4.10 gear is warranted.

If anyone else has results, please....chime in! :nice:

Ok, so I am going to be going with the NX valve plate 100 shot, and I can't decide between 4.10's and 3.73's. My racing action takes place from a 40 mph roll, up a little past 100 mph. What is everyone's reccomendation for me

FORGET what the people tell you. I will tell you right now you need to decide what you need the gears for? For example...if you want to, or DO go to the track a lot, then I would recommend 4.10s or 4.30s as they will net you the better 1/4 gains. If you only want to go to the track sometimes, or once a year, and do primarily city/street driving, then you still might want to get the 4.10s because they are REDICULOUSLY fun stoplight to stoplight =) and will give you a nice SOTP feel and ''get up and go''.

If you do a lot of highway driving or highway racing (i do not condone highway racing :D) then i would recommend going no higher than 3.73, as you will quickly find out going 65 on the highway and then racing someone to 100+ will quickly be over with 4.10s, as you will get blown by with 4.10s going over 100. Now im NOT saying you lose top end with 4.10s, im just saying that you will get passed quicker when you have steeper gears. 3.73 on the highway however will keep you going strong in a highway race. But 3.73 wont keep up with the 4.10s and 4.30s stop light to stop light or in a 1/4 mile run to about 100mph.

So you really have to think about wha tyou do the most and what your application is. Forget the people that say 4.10s or death! because I had 4.10s in my auto 98GT and I barely felt a difference. I would only feel a difference when i lined up to race and noticed i passed the guy easeier then normal. And on the highway in my auto, my top speed dropped from 150 to 120. I'll never do gears in an auto again, but then again, i'll never own an auto again :)...but thats besides the point.

So look at what you want to use them for and ignore the 4.10 cult on this forum. For the record I owned 4.10s once, and I NEVER owned 3.73 and im saying this, so my opinion is not biased towards 3.73, in fact its the opposite. I CAN say however that I will put 3.73 in my current GT when I get the money, but I do a LOT of highway driving, so...its all relative [/endrant]

It's funny how it's always 3.73 vs 4.10s. 3.90s are a great alternative gear that should also be mentioned and not ignored. I started to go with 3.90s after my drivetrain mechanic highly recommended them. The only thing that kept me from doing that was I wanted the extra performance to post a "K" against a heated rival at work recently in a Monte Carlo SS (Supercharged) and I needed everything I could get (in a '98 NPI 4.6). If I had a PI car I would get 3.90s and not even blink if I decided to get a blower for it.

Well 3.90s are made out of a different metal and I hear they are more fragile and require replacing after about 30k miles. Thats all hear-say but enough for me not to get them. PLUS 3.90s are like "you're on the fence" either go with the 3.73 or the 4.10s already!! There is no "happy medium" with 3.90s.

3.90s are like a bastard middle gear, forget them :D
