AOD to tremec? Which one?

I smoked my AOD tranny and am now going to put in a tremec 5 speed in my 89 LX 5.0. How do I decide which tremec to purchase, any suggestions, who has the best deals on them, what other parts should I buy? Any help would be needed. If anyone knows of a good website that explains all this, let me know that too. Thanks

Well, i believe now you can only get the TKO 500 or 600, and they are around the same price, so common sense tells you get the 600.

You need a new yoke for the driveshaft (31spline), bellhousing specifically for a tremec, and a 26 spline clutch disc.

I'm pretty sure a tremec now comes with a shifter so you might be ok with that.

You may look for a 3550 for sale that is used and in good condition. I got mine used two years ago for an awsome deal. With it, you need a bellhousing, and a shifter, but none of the other fun stuff.
Oh, and you'll love banging your own gears. :nice:

banging ur own gears is the best feeling ever. if u "smoked" ur aod trans then id go for a tremec 3550tko. they will handle anything u want to throw at it. But if u get one new id plan on handing over about 2k for everything

I believe the 3550 is now the tko 500, and if you have to buy all new parts, it's better to get the 600, because the price comes out to be about the same.

I think the 500 has a 10 spline clutch shaft (don't quote me on that), but he has an auto so he needs a new clutch anyway.

Ok hold on before everyone gets carried away. Just because it's called a "600" instead of a "500" that doesn't mean it's better. The difference between the two is that they have different gear ratios. Both the TKOs have 26 spline input shafts unless you order one with a 10 spline shaft but not all places carry that model. This site has some information on the different Tremec models.

I believe the 600 has a somewhat higher power handling than the 500 as well. However, I went with the 500 because I liked the gear ratios better. I don't figure that I'll ever get to the point that the power difference will matter.
