Good 347 Article in 5.0 Mag

The Mag with Oink's GF has a great article for those asking about 347 combos, including myself.

Instead of describing the article, you can read it, but it addresses AFR 165's vs 185's on a car with RPM II intake, (Forgot the cam) 1-3/4 longtubes, electric WP, etc. The results favored the 185's for that combo. I just liked the article b/c it is pertainent to something we are always talking about on here.

i agree it was a good article but its almost a no brainer that 185's are better when you have alot of induction mods or more Cubes...

didnt they do one similar to that when they tested the same cam on a 302 and a 347?

they do a better job of tech stuff than most other mags ford biased or not..

True, but they showed how there was NO loss down low with the torque, which we always question, and they used the RPM II intake, which we were all considering a "nice" intake for that app.

It was a good read for sure, I just wish they would have used a better suited cam for that combo. The one they used was very small IMO for that application.

i agree that they used a small cam , but i would like to see if they use the stock cam how much difference just the heads alone would make??? what i really want to know is waht would happen to my combo if i added cubes would my 165's really be a limiting factor ??i am not so sure

Really if you look at the flow ratings between the 165's and the 185's, there is not that much of a difference. The exhaust flow is identical, and the intake is close, with the only advantage the 185 has is after .500" of lift. I read another article comparing the two heads (I think it was on a 306 or something, not a stroker) and there wasn't that much of a gain switching to 185's. I think with some porting then the 165's can outflow the 185's.

yeah, but keep in mind that afr doesnt suggest porting bc they are a fully cnc'ed head.

I couldn't believe they used such a small cam. That cam was smaller then my FTI cam!

there's a good article here aboutAFR's 165 VS 165 Competition Porting package part#1404 head both on a 347. the only thing that sux is you need to be a paying member to be able to read after page 1.

In their app, it wasnt "REALLY" limiting.. I think if YOU added more cubes with the blower, it would be.

I think for using a "small" cam, the numberslooked pretty good. Gives me some hope for close to 400 at the wheels if I use a better cam. (Since I can put longtubes on mine)

THere are so many different combos and whats/ifs with each test. Good to see that one is attainable for most of us if we wanted.
