GT auto to V6 stick - is this a good or bad idea?

I can't believe any red blooded American Male(or female) would ask such a question..... should I trade in my V-8 for a 6 banger??? Dude even if I got 10 MPG, I still would never, ever trade in my GT for a V-6.

Sheesh i cant believe thats even being considered.... I dont even consider V6s to be stangs at all...
Ever thought of doing a 5speed swap into your stang if you want a manual tranny so much?

I've thought about swapping my auto to a stick but it's really not worth it. Just mod up the auto enough and it'll need to be auto anyway :p
My next stang...definitely a stick...and a cobra :nice:

Taking a Gt and putting a v6 in it is as close to castrating the car as you can get, without putting a NA 2.3 liter in it.

Why the heck would you ditch a v8/auto for a v6/stick? What is the world coming to?

This seems overwhelming so far. GT is winning hands down.

Maybe I should've asked this in the V6 forum! :D

Going to go against the herd and say do it. I had a bone stock '01 GT auto and would rather have a V6 with about $1500 in performance mods. One of those mods of course would be 4.10 gears just like you already have.

Hey all. I need some opinions, quick!

I'm going to look at a V6 Mustang tomorrow that's a 5 speed. The reason I'm interested in it is because of the 5 speed mainly, and better gas mileage.

I'm wondering what you GT guys think. Do you think this is a terrible idea to downgrade 2 cylinders? Or would it be a good idea, seeing as how gas prices are high, the insurance would be cheaper, and the car is a manual?

I currently have a diablosport predator, and I have done exhaust work to my auto and put 4.10s in the rear. I like the car's power a lot, but I don't ever go to a track as there is not one near me.

Mod plans for the V6 would be 17" wheels, short-throw shifter, tint, CAI, possibly exhaust (but maybe not), Ford Racing "C" springs, and a strut-tower brace. I'd want the V6 to be more for fun show and handling, not straight-line power.

Mod plans for my GT are: Tint, Magnaflow catted X, some sort of sleeper muffler, Ford Racing "C" springs, strut tower brace... I think that's it, for now. :D

Would I be better off converting my GT to a 5 speed, or am I better of just going with the V6 and making it look nice and not really worry about the power so much, but just play around with a 5 speed? I've heard it's a ton of money to convert a car, and most people tell me just to trade it for a 5 speed if I really want that. I would not be doing the work myself - a shop would do it for me, so I would have to pay their labor.

I would be new to a 5 speed, I should mention that. I've always had autos for ease of use, but I'm starting to want the 5 speed's control.

So, what's the verdict? :nice: :notnice:

Give me your auto and I'll get give you my 96 5spd...No 4real just a a gt 5spd if you want a manual. You will hate the V6 even if it is manual, I mean your coming from auto gt with 4:10's and going to a v6. Stop right now :damnit:

Your 4.10s are a great start! You can match or out-punch a 5 speed with the following mods:

1. High stall torque converter (around 2400-2800 rpm stall). A little expensive
2. Shift kit (J-mod). Cheap
3. Tranny cooler. A great and cheap mod.

Do a search on your 4R70W transmission and the above mods. There is tons of information on this board. Some people have done some great things to wake up this stock granny-friendly transmission.

Or just get a 5 speed GT. You can find some pretty good deals.

Whatever you do, don't trade it in for a V6 or you may wake up to a lynch mob on your front lawn.

I definitely agree with your last statement about the lynch mob. Maybe I should change my location information on here.

I have a Predator tuner. I've set my shifts all to their firmest settings. For daily driving, that is silly to me though (for the partial throttle shifts) because I don't need my neck snapped when the auto is shifting at 15, 25, 35 mph when I'm just moving up to the speed limit in a conservative manner. I do have my WOT shifts on the firmest settings however.

I am looking into different shifters, such as the Hammer and others. Any recommendations there? I am interested in the reverse shifters as well. Those look nice. Any ideas on one that looks nice inside a 99+ GT and would give me a nice manual option if I wanted it?
