is it fairly easy to replace lifters? also, occasionaly, my car will back fire a bit when i shift into 2nd or 3rd. could a bad lifter casue this by holding open a valve? If i replace the lifters, could the backfire go away?

do you have an offroad h-pipe? alot of times that happens with an o/r h-pipe from the excess unburned fuel on a stock type motor. my 5.0 did that when it was stock.

you will need to pull the upper/lower intake to get at the lifters. take off the valve covers also, loosen/remove all the rockers to get the pushrods out of the way. once they are clear, you remove the piece holding all the lifters down and pull them out.

if you have never pulled the intake, it might be helpful to have someone there to make sure you get everything sealed up properly or you can have other issues.

rockers should be torqued to 24 pounds btw. start there. i have a set of lifters with almost no miles on them in lacey if you end up needing to buy them.

Well, first off, i'd like to ask you if you are 100% sure it's not a header gasket leak (sometimes at the head side and sometimes at the h pipe side., it happens and very often it sounds like a tick. Stick your head in there, and use your hand to operate the throttle, and if you get close enough you can tell.

Second, what type of mods are done to the car, because if you are going to pull the intake, might as well put a better one on if the money is available. Along with a set of roller rockers.

yeah, thinking about driving sunday for the car show.

it will all depend on how my deck install goes/doesnt go. im not driving there without a cd player and listening to my damn cobra bumper rattle on the tailpipe.

I have a lifter tick in my engine of a type that has been described in earlier threads. Basically, the engine is quiet when cold, and develops the tick when warm. The noise is most noticeable between 2000 and 2500 rpm. I am running 10-30 Castrol, and fixed the problem by replacing one quart of oil with Lucas oil additive (in the earlier thread Slick 50 accomplished the same thing). I do not like this fix because i started with a new GT40 (aluminum head) crate motor and it did this from day 1. Later I replaced the B303 cam with a Comp Cams XE264 HR (.512 lift). Lifter preload was fine. The noise got worse over the next 5,000 milers so I put in a set of Comp Cams lifters. The noise decreased but did not go away. The only thing that fixed it was the Lucas oil additive. Considering the engine is supposed to run on 10-30 and is essentially brand new, this is wrong. Oil pressure at 800 rpm idle was 40 psi hot, now it is 50 psi hot. I know it is not an exhaust leak (I built my own headers and tracked down and welded up all the pinholes) or rocker problem because I have the pedestal rockers that are not prone to this problem. I almost think the lifter bores are machined oversized ...
