helmet required for 1/4 mile?

If your car is almost stock, on street tires, you probally won't need one.

Don't go down the track with a helmet unless your required. It makes you look like such a poser. There was this one guy with a Focus. He unloaded it off a trailer, full roll cage (at least 10pt), he had a full firesuit on, helmet, the works, (even the shoes) and ran high 12's.... in the 1/8th. You should have heard the jokes, and the announcer cracked on him like no other.

Personally if I didn't know how fast my car was I'd bring the helmet but not wear it for the first run.....and then if you run faster than 13.9, wear it for the rest of your runs. Oh and NHRA rules says you need a SNELL 95 or newer helmet.....(stupid rule)

My track requires everyone to wear a helmet no matter what. Tech involved a fat redneck asking me if my car was basically stock....you answer yes, he signs your card and you're off. I don't even think he looked in the direction of the car the entire time.

first time commin up! What do I need to have? Do I have to pass a tech inspection? How do I prepare?

You should call you local track and ask them. Depending on who certified the track(NHRA, IHRA etc.)those will be the rules you have to follow. At my track if you are on slicks, no matter how slow you run you have to have a D/S safety loop.

IHRA and NHRA tracks will require you to have a helmut. I believe the D/S rule stated by Mav. is NHRA. For sure if you're running slicks. My local track is no longer sanctioned, but they still require a helmut. New NHRA rules this spring have moved the cage rule down to 11.49. I think this is in anticipation of the upcoming new Vette that will run high 11's from the factory.
