Mongoose kit or Kenny Bell?

i have never been in a mod motor mustang with a KB, novi 2000 yes and it was fast after 3000 rpms. I was in a 5.0 fox with KB and that was a tq monster snapped you in the seat. My buddy has a lightning with the
kb replacement blower and that thing is sick....so i'm torn between them. I've been trying to decide for a couple months which to get....i was going to get a positive displacent blower but now i'm leaning towards the vortech. choices are hard...

I had :
Vortech 441rwh #14
KB 1.7 (hp drop off at around 5400) #14
Added Cams & Ported heads (hp flattened out at 500 until I shut it down)
KB 2.2 #18
hp pulls strong all the way now.

Vortech was real easy to run at the track. PD cars would be a few car lenghts ahead at the start , I would pass them at the trap like they were standing still.
On the street I had to wind it out to get the most pull.

KB 1.7 Great street car. Instant power. Gave up on top. I think the Vortech #14 with heads an cams would beat it. At this point I still would vote for the KB. Much more fun on the street. Vortech was great sound at idle but gone at high rpm. KB got louder as the RPM increased (BTW consensus the sound is much like a 747).

KB 2.2
No contest. Violent at launch, keeps pulling up top. I sure did notice the 100rwh increase at 6200rpm. No flat hp line here. The tune / pulley is not at its max. Just the way I want it on the street.

The decision depends on what you want. You will be happy with both.

BTW- A polished KB catches an eye or 2. The best intake ever made for a 2v 4.6.

I would go with the mongoose kit. Im not sure what your looking for but if i did a supercharger i would want which ever one will give me the best track times. I could be wrong but it seems to me that most screw type blowers are dyno queens but dont deliver at the track for the amount of power and torque they are making. Although i dont remember what centrifical blower cars turn at the track with similar power to kb cars so i might just be assuming something totally wrong

I beg to differ, my KB has delevierd a 11.98 with mild mods @ 4400ft above sea level...

Do you have the 1.7 or the 2.2? i wouldnt compare an s-trim to the 2.2, but comsidering your altitude thats a really good time and the first kenne bell car with track times that have impressed me. What other mods or weight reduction have you done?

That's a fair real world comparison.

Obviously both types of S/C can do the job getting from point A to point B. The following quote in blue is from a guy who goes by the name 'GI Joe'. He's explaining the differences between his former Novi 2000 setup and his current KB 2.2 setup. Both setups had ported heads/ aftermarket cams and put out 600+ rwhp thru an auto transmission.

"At the track the K/B is very strong out of the hole (not that the other set-up was slouch)..but this is much stronger...almost violent...Its like sitting at a traffic light and getting hit in the rear by a big truck. It pulls very strong to the 1/8 mile mark a
nd then the "feeling" is flat...
...With the Novi it leaves hard but not as hard.....BUT at the 1/8 mile that thing is pulling so hard that I would laugh sometimes at how hard it was to get my hand on the shifter in 3rd to get it to shift to 4th. ...The front of the car is up and she's pulling to the moon.....I definitely noticed the flat feeling at mid track with the K/B...it was noticable...again not that it was a slouch there either, but that the very hard [increasing] pulling feeling was not there...I can see that as the perfect spot for a shot of NOS :). "

I notice you have Comp 270AH's. Would you have a guesstimate on how much gain the cams alone give you?

His setup is impressive, but note that he's running 11 psi. That's more airflow than 11 psi on an S-Trim. I.e, it's more like 14 psi on an S-Trim. Also, from all I've heard, 11 psi on a 1.7 or 2.2 KB is not safe on pump gas even with an intercooler.

Exactly right. Just because they're both seeing 14psi, doen't mean that they're both seeing the same volume of air. Centi's have always had to spin higher and harder to move air. Not because they're a lesser blower, but because that's part of their design.

Thats the other problem i have with kenne bell, they create way to much heat even with an intercooler. If i was running a supercharger i would not want intake air temps that high.
Well....if you're running it to 9psi and beyond, then I wouldn't worry too much about intake temps. KB's intercooler does a pretty decent job of managing ACT's. You're kind of at a catch 22 on that one otherwise, because below 6psi KB's make a lot of heat and Centi's that are usually run below 8psi don't really make enough horsepower. The only blowers that really perform well below 6psi and under are the small Eaton’s....which are great until you start spinning them hard....then you're into problems with charge temperatures again. I wouldn’t worry too much about heat and boost numbers per say and pick and run your blower based on where they operate most efficiently. Boost levels and discharge temps are only relative to a point. They should be used as more of a guideline to aid in your decision, more so than cold hard fact.

No really sure how much HP since I changed cam and port at same time.
KB1.7 No Cams

KB1.7 Cams & Head Port

Notice how the HP line did not drop . I actually flattened out.

This was fixed with the 2.2.
KB 2.2 Dyno

If i were going to do FI, i would go with the Novi. You get the power up top, which is where we have our big disadvantage against the LS1s guys. Also with a KB you have all that power down low and it makes it harder to get a good launch without spinning your tires forever. I mean you could still get a great launch, but it would be a lot harder. Don't get me wrong though.....KB's still make me
