Thinking of ordering an '06

I have to admit that all my life I've been an Oldsmobile guy, had lots of 442s and Hurst/Olds'. But I'm also at the point where I'm tired of wrenching and want a NEW car. The GTO just doesn't do it for me, and no offense to the Mopar guys, but I don't want a 4-door. So I drove an '05 Mustang GT today and was surprised at the interior room, which is important, since I'm 6'4". Two of my buds in high school both had '67 Mustangs, so the styling is like a time warp for me.

The dealer said he'd order me an '06 5-speed GT for MSRP, which is not a bad deal, since around here GTs are damn near impossible to find and they're bringing over sticker.

Anyway, I'm considering ordering the 5-speed coupe, Premium pkg, and interior upgrade pkg. I'm not a big audiophile, so the killer sound system would be wasted on me. And this is going to be a weekend car, since I have a company car. I'll get the stock wheels and put some chrome wheels on later. Anybody have any suggestions?

This is my first post here, so say HI to the newb :)

Welcome, congrats on the order. The factory bullits look really good on the car. People have been putting from 17" to 20" wheels on the car. You should be able to get a 10" wide in the back without a problem, but when selecting wheels get the correct backspacing. Go through the picture post pinned above to get some good ideas from others.

You can probably find a dealer to order you one on Ford's X-plan which will save you a few thousand. I'm a GM guy myself having had several Cutlasses, Regals, GPs, Montes, and Camaros. I test drove a 400HP GTO but just didn't like it. I ordered an '06 Mustang.

For friends and family of Ford employee's. If you have already commited yourself to sticker, stick with it. First you will have to find someone who will give you X-Plan and then you will have to wait more for the car since most dealers are unwilling and put it behind other orders (even when they say they don't). Although then again if your in no hurry that extra cash you have to pay does not keep its value since the initial rush on these will wear off. Of course that means you have to find someone willing to give you an X-Plan pin. Oh, by the way, X-Plan is 91% of sticker.

Welcome to the board Jon. I've just changed my '05 V6 Coupe for an '05 V6 Convertible (no worries for headroom there ;-) ). I'm 6'2" & had loads of room in the coupe - then I do tend to have the seat fairly laid back (I had loads of headroom in an MGB GT that way) - I found that I could even stand sitting in the back seat (never had to but it was important to check - just in case).

What colour have you ordered?

I think I'm going to order white with light graphite leather. Then add Sonic Blue stripes for that '65 GT350 look :)

I'm waiting on the dealer to call me when he gets a 5-speed GT in so I can drive it. By back hurt me somewhat after I drove the automatic the other day. Some seats hit me wrong. So I want to drive the 5-speed and play with the seat settings some more.

Dude, I would at least test drive the 05 GTO. Sounds like you are getting a good deal from your dealer on the 06 if you go that route. Personally, (if I liked Stangs) I would save my pennies for the GT500 or get one of the 03 Cobras that folks are getting rid of.

Mechanically, the GTO is awesome. But the styling is much too bland. If it didn't have those GTO badges on it, you wouldn't know what it was. There's no mistaking a Mustang. The GT500 is going to be awesome, too, but I don't want to spend that much money for a weekend toy. My dealer says he already has 12 deposits for the GT500 and of course he won't get that many. And the pre-'05 Mustangs are too small on the inside for me.

I can get you an X-Plan pin, my uncle works for ford. But I want money for my trouble. Say like $500 bucks. Up to you.

I really hope you're joking and not trying to take advantage of someone who is uninformed.

JonW, x-plan pins are FREE, and it is against the rules to buy and sell them. Ford offers incentives for employess to give them away. Here is the thread for requesting your free pin number:

Sounds like you thought it out pretty well. Unfortunately, some of us can never be satisfied...LOL.

Sounds nice Jon.
My vert is Sonic Blue, I'm toying with putting white stripes on in the near future - I'll photoshop it first to see if I like it, though I keep seeing a GT Coupe with that setup & I still like that.

That customer expansion plan is not applicable to Mustangs.

I see you are in MO I live near Kc and Louisburg Ford which is right down the road from me sells GTs at 50 over the invoice. So that would save you about 2-3k on the car. I love mine and wouldn't trade it in for any other car out there. some have complained about the handleing but I love it. Its tight and responsive...now I can't say I have taken a corner at 60mph yet but...other than that she has been tested. Further...I am still on the waiting list at Louisburg for an '06. I am sure if you wanted to take my spot they would give it to you as right now the car is still mine. Good luck...keep us updated on how ur search goes. I got lucky and found a slightly used one.

Thanks for the tip about Louisburg. Are they a big enough dealer where they have enough Mustang allocation to actually get the car? Some dealers will take your deposit and the car never shows up. I'm not saying they would do that, but selling a hot car for $50 over invoice makes you wonder.

The Darker interior (Charcoal) is more satisfying IMO.
Especially with the white exterior
