well to make a long story short, my "pumpkin" was used to jack up my car and the result is a leak. Not my doing, but it looks like I will be repairing it. What kind of money am I looking at spending. Here's a pic of the damage, not much, but it is leaking. Any help would be great.

Yeah I had the same thing happen. Go to your local parts store buy some gear oil, friction modifier and some black RTV, I used Toyota FIPG but I'm a differant case. Take the cover off, use a long 3/8 extension and small ball-peen hammer to flatten out the bent part. Then clean the surfaces, use a lil carb clean and a razor on the diff housing, a wire wheel will work best on the cover. Apply a generous amount of RTV to cover, reinstall and then give it lil time to set (some people don't do this, I do). Then refill with gear oil and 4oz of friction modifier and your done. Really not much, might take a lil over an hour if you've never done it before.

well that sucks,
but you would do well to change it for a stronger one like FRPP pumpkin or some other make. They run something like $200 and it only take 30 mins to fit.
Just to make the rear end more solid. :nice:

Link? is it the one that used to say Ford SVO on the back?

if you get a new cover i would get the mac BBK, or the SVO... will cost a bit more, but if you are going to replcae, might as well get something that is better.

its really easy to work on, but filling it can be a massive pain. get a syringe or a pump to get the oil into the pumpkin.

Do not use gear oil go to the Ford Parts counter and get the correct 75W-140 synth and just get the friction modifier there as well...
I personally run Mobile One synth., why not run gear oil? I have put it in 20 plus rearends with no problems, I do use the ford friction modifier but have also used the Auto Zone brand or whatever brand they sell in the tube.

There is a tag on the 99+ diffs that specifically says "Use 75W-140 Synth Only". That is what I based my recommendation on...

Pssst hey Kilgore Trout and forpit2000gt, you guys are talking about the same thing :p It is just semantics, Mobil calls it Gear Lube.

I change mine every year and Mobil 1 75W-140 is hard to find around here so I just run Motorcraft High Performance 75W-140 and friction modifier in mine. It is 100% fully synthetic.

Don't forget the Additive Friction Modifier

I understand about the synthertic thing, but still had put together many 8.8 without synth. An 8.8 diff. has been pretty interchangable with internal parts for a long time and didn't always have synth. lube recommended. There are a bunch outh there with Coastal brand and others that have been and will be fine. Does anyone know why Ford started recommneding synth. Bearing wear , heat??? Also, a lot of rears from the Factory are at least 1 quart lower than what you put back in to the fill hole.

Here is one of the best articles I have seen on changing the rear diff fluid.

I wouldn't mess with the aftermarket covers unless you are putting down enough power to need one. With a little bit of elbow grease and metal polish you can get more than enough bling out of the stock cover :D

thanks that is exactly what I need. I knew I could count on you guys!
