.060" Crank endplay... Ouch!!

When you installed the transmission, did you install the steel plate that goes between the motor and transmission? Just wondering if the input shaft might have bottomed out against the pilot bearing shoving the crank shaft forward.

This was my thought, also. What tranny are you using? I read on here some time ago a fellow had a similar failure when using a 4 cylinder tranny, they have an approx. .250" longer input shaft.
Good luck.

Yes I am using the plate between the block and bellhousing. It is a stock T-5 from my old engine. I just brought the crank to the shop that did the machining on the block and they said it it fixable. They will send it out and have it welded and ground. Said it will only be about $100 and a couple of days. They couldnt figure out what caused it other than the clutch. Now that I think about it, when I first drove it around the block, the clutch cable was tight. Im thinking that this has something to do with it. It could have hapened right when I started it and just got worse with more miles.

So you dont think that having the clutch preloaded and pushing the crank forward for the first 10-15 min of this engines life could have worn the crank like that? Thats is the only thing that I can think of. The machine shop is saying to look at the clutch really close but I just dont see how it could have anything to do with it if the cable is slack. Ive taken everything apart and am cleaning everything before I reasemble.

It is more likely on an auto due to the makeup of the converter. If the coverter pushes forward it will take out the thrust, if the converter balloons it will also take out the flush.

Clearances are a little more important on an automatic car, the thrust clearance is also opened up a few thou...

Just an update: I got the crank back Thursday afternoon and it looks great. Got the engine together and put it in Saturday night. Got it running today. Seems to be ok for now. I need to get this thing smoged before somethin happends again so im not going to beat on it too much. Still didnt find anything wrong with it tho  .

Got some bad news. Just checked the endplay and there is a lot! I was using a 0-.015" indicator and it maxed it out. Its got 60 miles on it. Dont really know what to do now. The only thing it can be is the clutch. When I started it, I had the clutch cable disconnected so there was no load on it at all. Its getting really old tearing the thing apart every week. Im at a loss for what to do next.

I still don't think it is the clutch....

Can't figure out what it is but the clutch can't be putting that kind of load on the crank. Manula cars just do not take out the trust like that...

Post over on www.hardcore50.com a lot of builders are there, maybe someone has an answer. The owner of Probe posts there as well.

What bearing numbers did you use on this rebuild?
