Ok so I'm looking for some opinions here on rear end gears. I need a rebuild, so I'm going to take it to blue oval (if they do that, Im sure they do) and while its apart, throw some gears in it.

I know the advantages and disadvantages of both gear ratios, such as gas mileage, top speed etc. But looking for some opinions.

The only thing I'm really worried about with the 4.10s is not having much of a first gear, and of course my RPM at fifth gear at 65mph. I dont know what it would be like, as I've never had a stang with 4.10s before.

I did have a stang with 3.73s, and I liked it. Seemed to launch well. Seemed to do ok on the freeway. So this is the way I'm leaning.

I guess what I want to know is, whether you guys think the jump from 3.73s to 4.10s would be enough of a performance bonus to bother with. I know this would cut my top speed, but help at the track. What do you guys think?

4.10s or 4.30s,you will only be at about 2500rpm at 65 with 4.10s so what the hell just throw in some 4.30s and hold on.first shouldnt be to bad my freinds car has 4.10s and 1st gear goes by slow enough.im doing 4.30s was possibly considering 4.56s but decided that might be a little to extreme :D

look to the long term, I went from stock 2.73 to 3.73 and then to a 3.27 all within about a year with my different combo's, and in the end should have settled on the 3.73 or a 3.55 for my application. Know where your going and the answer will become more clear. My personal preference would be 3.73's knowing that a blower may be in your future.

The answer depends on your goals.

If you plan to go to the track much, and if track performance matters to you, get 4.10's.

-You will be able to run more cam with the 4.10's.

-The 4.10's, will allow you to run a taller tire to effectively reduce your ratio (a 28 inch tire will result in an effective ratio of 3.80).

If you really don't go to the track much, but you do a lot of highway cruising, get 3.73's.

-with 3.73's you can run a stock cam and stock 26 inch tall tire and go through the traps in 4th.

You gotta be kiddin. Sounds like a waste to me. I could see it if you were running giant slicks on the car, but for the street? I had 4.56s in a chevy truck with 44" tires, and it still seemed a bit low at times.

I am planning on a blower, probably next winter or spring, so maybe 3.73s now would be a smart idea. But the 4.10s are still calling my name as well.

Looks like I have about 3 weeks to figure it out!

Well, I had to buy the parts today, so I made the decision: it will be 3.73s.

I made it based on advice from others, and thinking it out. Basically I want the higher gear for accleration / quarter mile. But, the difference between 3.73s and 4.10s is probably not enough to justify the higher RPM at cruising speed, if I decide to do a long trip. Also, I've never driven a stang with 4.10s, and I dont want any surprises.

Also, as Jeff said, a blower is in the future plans, so that factors in. Not to mention, if I decide I want a lower ratio at the track, I can always get smaller tires. If I get a lower gear and go with larger tires for the highway, There is more wieght, and rubbing issues. Easier for me to go smaller in my opinion.

So, when Mischa asked, I opted for 3.73s. I'll post my findings here, but I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the choice.

I am also having them put a black magic fan on my car. So, with the new aluminum radiator, electric fan, and gears, I should be able to get rid of the 15.x time. We shall see.

Jeremy,
You forgot..

and with the installing of the seats misha got me then Im able to get rid of the full tool box holding up my driver seat, NOW I should be able to get rid of the 15.x time!! :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

Well, I decided at the last minute on 4.10s, and I drove it quite a bit today. Needless to say, acceleration has improved drastically. She gets up and scoots pretty quick.

The freeway is kind of annoying, it runs about 2200 at 65, which I can handle, just takes some getting used to. I keep feeling like I need to shift now.

But, all my low end acceleration is great, 1st thru 4th accelerates a whole lot better, and I find I dont need to drop the gears as much to drive like a maniac. Accleration from 55 to 85 is a snap, and it just feels a whole lot better. Much more G-Force. I dont think I'll see a whole lot of 140mph+ runs now though, but thats probably for the better anyway. This move may have saved my life!

These gears did expose some problems though, I need another set of u joints I think, and the clutch is a little slippery at times (I thought it was the trac-loc, but its still there).

That being said, I am very satisfied overall with the gear change, I dont really care as much about the mileage, most of my driving is around town, which its very snappy.

Thanks to Jeff and AFP/Blue Oval Performance for the timely and great job on the car. The gears don't whine a bit, so they were shimmed right, and everything is great with my fan install, but thats another thread.

i have 3:73 in my car and i like how they pull, and at speeds past 100 i still have rpms to go 4:10s are also good

but if your motor is really built and is still on the street i would go for the 373 because its gonna be puttin alot of strain on them but if you are notso built and arnt on the highway all that often go for the 410s .atleast thats what i would do.

I dont feel comfortable posting the prices here, but I can tell you it's very reasonable. The price was very good for the work that was done. Give AFP a call for a quote
Good advise! I'm thinking about going from the 3.55's i have to 4.10's as well, but not shure bout them with the bottle? I run about 2,000 RPM at 60 or so with the 3.55's now in 5th........... i think? it's been so long since i drove my car fast enough to register on the speedo! :nonono: but this weekend will change all that! WOODBURN???????? peace

I'm not sure about the bottle either, not using it now. But I would guess at about 4th-5th you could shoot it just fine. The first few gears are pretty short.

I must say though, if you do 4.10s, you wont regret it. Even out on the freeway tonight, I was able to really rip it up. The difference in torque is amazing. My front end jumps all over the place now!
