Hey guys, I will be installing new motor mounts this weekend (convertable) and can't remember for the life of me where I did jack up the motor from when I did my LT install some yrs back. Shoud I with a say 12 inch 2x4 jack it up from under the frot sump..or rear? The rear is not flat (stock style replacement pan) and has the oil drain plug of course dead center, while the front sump seems more jack freindly. I unfortunately do not have access to a picker, and will be raising it via jack/wood block. Let me know guys...Thanks,
Derek.

Dont do it on the pan. This mechanic did that to my dads truck and it crack dented and now my dad cant change his oil unless he puts a new oil pan on it.
You can bet money if I used a mechanic, and this occured I'd have left that garage with a new pan installed, or a mechanics toolbox full of his tools. Anyhow I appreciate the input..I am leaning towards the front sump..I just want to be sure the front sump can handle the weight of the the engine..thanks guys.

That's a great idea..same one I rec'd from another very reliable source (older source). I wasn't sure if the bell housing could handle the weight, but I thought I could have a secondary jack under the sump to take off some of the force. The engine is new, and as a freind pointed out to me..jacking primarily on the pan could damage the oil pan gasket, which has already been kind of a situation I just corrected. So the bell housing sounds great..thanks.

That's a good idea Pete I just used a small block of wood under my rear sump and have a nice dent in the pan to prove it   . If I ever have to do it without a lift again I paln to do like you are sugesting using more than one jack to support the weight. Hindsight is 20/20

DMAN - Make sure you do a follow up on this. I'm thinking of putting in new mounts myself and would like to know how it went.
PS, I have always heard of guys using the pan, but I have to admit I've never felt comfortable with it. Just try to distribute the weight as much as possible.

Those sheetmetal pans are surprisingly strong. The pan on the aod, just a semi square pressed metal pan, supports that 200 pound monster when it's sitting on the ground. If you dont present any sharp edges, the oilpan will hold up just fine. I like the bellhousing support since if the jacks slip, the motor wont fall on your head.

Ok so I will raise the engine from the front lip of the bell housing..via jack and wooden block (2x4)..then once height is reached..will place jack on front sump (also with wood block) and jack up until SOME resistance is felt in the jack. Thanks guys I don't remember my method when I installed my LT's but I'm sure this one is a better approach.
