Explorer motor

Well spun a bearing in my 99 GT and decided to go for an explorer motor since the stang is my daily driver and I drive atleast 70 miles daily, I've been researching this a lot the past few days but I have a few questions unanswered maybe someone can help here's what I've compiled so far:
  • I know I can use a 02-03 4.6L but what about the 2004?
  • The GT and Explorer oil pans and oil pick-ups are different and need to be swapped out. You will also need to use the GT oil filter housing on the Explorer motor.
  • I can use my t45 trans but I'll need to get a 6 bolt flywheel because the explorer motors have a 6 bolt crankshaft
  • All my aftermarket parts should bolt right on (pulleys, prochamber, fipk intake)
  • Also I read somewhere about a large line of explorer engines that weren't balanced and there's a way to tell whether or not they were but I forget where I saw that
Am I missing anything here? Any other info I should know about before getting my hands dirty?

I'm actually wondering if you could fit an 05 3v 5.4L in there....I work for a ford dealership and those 5.4 3v motors are pretty damn punchy in the expiditions and f-150s, and you think, the mustangs are probably half that weight? That would be a badass car...

I'm gonna look into this, I wanna know if I can fit one in an 04...

1. I'm using an '03 longblock, It fits great.

5. True. Easiest way to see if you got a 'bad' one is to to pull the oil pan. and look at the crankshaft journals... Do you see any 11/16" holes drilled in them? If you see NO holes drilled, you got a bad motor.

Don't forget to install a pilot bearing in the crank.

To use the GT timing cover on the Ex motor (required) a bit of silicone needs put in one of the upper bolt holes on the driver's side and let it cure, just full the hole and use your finger tip to smooth each side... Then during final assy, apply silicone to the block face around the hole you filled (along with the other joint areas) and install the cover. Easy mod, no hassle. You'll see which hole it is when you mock it up.

Mike thanks for the reply, I just bought a 02 exp motor with 5,000 miles on it for $950 should be shipped out tomorrow. The lady I spoke to though told me the wiring harness was definitly different and that I'd need to "make" it work some how. I assume she had no idea what she was talkin about since everyone here is saying its just a plug and play.
 
Well, sucks that you spun a bearing, but congrats on the new engine.....just curious, how did you spin it? Shifting too high, just a freak thing, or spraying...and how many miles? Spun bearings seem to be the most common problem with the 4.6s, and them actually blowing up N/A is VERY rare.
