Intake to Hood Clearance

This question goes out to all Edelbrock Performer RPM and Typhoon intake users.

I know the factory strut tower brace will not fit with these intakes, but is there any problem with the intake manifold upper hitting the GT hood? I want to know if I need a Cobra R hood for when I do the intake swap in a few weeks.

i have the performer 5.0 and the hood closes, it might touch it but it doesnt do anything

Hmm, I don't know the height difference between the Performer and the Performer RPM.

Do you still have your hood blanket in place?

i cant give you a definet answer but i would think if you are not using a spacer it would clear? only a guess though. hopefully some knows more facts.

You could always measure how tall the Eddy is compared to your stocker. Then take some playdough and put a big piece on top of the stocker and close the hood to see how much room you have to work with.

So say the stock intake is 20" tall (I'm just using random numbers, I have no idea how tall it actually is) and the Eddy is 23", if the clay has more than 3" below where the hood makes it's mark, then you should be good.

Ah you know you still have a bunch laying around. Good deal, let us know how it works out, if you have to remove your heat blanket.

I might add, I removed my heat blanket a long time ago, so I'm not sure if my cobra intake would fit with it on.

Yeah, I'll probably post the whole process with pics (doing a fox tb swap w/ the intake) when I get it done. That should be within a short time. That kinda depends on how fast things ship.

Matt, I'm going to use a little bit of my common sense because I cannot give you definite answer...

RPM ranges of these manifolds are based entirely off of runner length. The longer the runner, the lower the power band is. So, the 5500 RPM rating of the regular Performer is because it's runners are LONGER than those of the 6500 RPM-rated Performer RPM.

And, since the RPM shares the same lower manifold as the Performer, I could only imagine that the differences in runner lengths are compensated for in the upper portion of the manifold.

Basically, what I'm saying is there shouldn't be any problems with clearance under the hood when using the Performer RPM upper. You may have to remove the hood blanket, but you shouldn't need a new hood.

Thanks Joe, I was kinda thinking along the same lines for the exact same reasons.

I still think I'm gonna try the clay method just to be sure so that I don't start the project and end up stuck in the middle of it.

Performer RPM Upper and Lower will fit under the hood. The top of the intake will rub against the underside of the hood blanket but this doesn't seem to cause any problems on my son's 1994 GT. I am going to put a Performer on my 1995 GT Convert along with the Edelbrock replacement strut tower brase.

Hood blanket will hit and leave marks on front corner of intake. Remove blanket and no problems. Here is a pic of how mine used to rub

I have the Typhoon Intake on my 95GT and the intake DOES touch the factory hood. It still closes but the factory black cloth under the hood has put a black stain on my typhoon intake. Let me put it this way, I have a Cobra R hood in my garage waiting to be put on right away. Hope this helps.

yeah my RPM fits fine. Rubs the blanket a bit but no biggie.
