Just got my '65 Fastback with some improvements. Added a Tremac 5 speed and Tri-y headers. What a jump in performance. I installed a posi with 3.55's last year and saw a little improvement, but dumping the Cruise-O-Matic was the best decision yet. Had a little clearance issue with the headers and the power steering cylinder, I had the drop bracket but had to extend it down another quarter inch to clear. She really screams now, gonna be expensive keeping rear tires on her! Mike

Which trans did you install? Is it the Tremec T-5 (same trans as Fox-body Mustangs) or one of the heavier units (TKO, TR3550, etc...). I have a T-5 in mine, but am counting the days until a little over-enthusiastic driving blows it apart, but have heard that the TKO / TR3550 / etc is a tight fit that requires some 'massaging' of the trans tunnel. By 'massaging' I mean cut out and replace...

What's your experience?

It's the Ford Racing Super Duty T-5 but has Tremac stamped into the case. The angles are the same as my old Cruise-O-Matic. Had to massage my bellhousing to accept the starter, but the tunnel had no clearance issues. I replaced the old '65 motor mounts with the newer design '66 mounts to clear the headers away from the shock towers. The headers are pretty close to the starter also, I am sure the extra heat will reduce my starter life. Mike

I put a tremec in my 68 fastback with minimal clearance issues. Since the tremec is basically a top loader with an overdrive. If you have a top loader 4 speed bell housing all you need is a spacer plate or a shorter input shaft. They are both available at about any mustang part supplier. I think I got mine from CJ's. If I remember right the shifter hole had to be enlarged. Your going to need a new crossmember and driveshaft work. Best money spent though. It's nice cruising around 80 at 2800 instead of 4k!

Just curios. Did you have any clearance problems with the manual trans? I have a 66 conv, & I was looking into the Tri-y's. Some catalogs say to modify, others don't. Any info is good info.

Check out G-Force: http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp

Bullet-Proof internals for your T5.

i can attest to the bullet-proof upgrade...... 416" windsor on drag radials. with the first motor (306 mechanical roller afr heads) i broke 1 reg T5...and 2 world glass T5's... normal street abuse..never attempted to drag race the car knowing the tranys would prolly break...after upgrading to the g-force guts... i havent had a single problem.

i run a wilwood hyd slave cyl, and tilton clutch master....... also running shorty headers which cook the crap out of the slave o-rings.... i usually replace them about every oil change....... so im looking for a better way while im in the "upgrade" mode.
