Drove an 06

Hey Guys,

I typically post in the 94-95 5.0 section but today I test drove an 06 convertible and was too excited not to at least post something on here. It was an 06 with the blue metallic speck paint and a black top. I come from a 94 GT Convertible so I was very skeptical of how the v6 would stand up to my v8. First off the top operation was amazing! I love how the windows roll down automatically and how nicely the top folds to almost flat. The drive itself was great, gone are the shakes and shimmys of my 94 replaced with flat smooth driving even on the highway. The interior was beautiful and extremely comfortable. The power almost shocked me, although it still wasn't the same as my car....especially right off the line, but it is a v6 afterall. I must say that I was very impressed, and can't wait to try out the 06 GT...... :nice: ....but figured I ought to stop by and give you guys some props....thanks for listening!

Glad you had a nice test drive... I'm coming from an 02 GT Vert... I too was amazed at this little ol' V6....

Was the 06 an Automatic by chance? You comment about "especially right off the line" makes me think maybe it was... The automatics are know to have horrible throttle response from a dead stop... this is due to the torque limiter which is easily corrected with a tune... LOL! The manuals also have some torque limiters but it's not as noticeable as the autos... Mines an auto and stock I could not even get the car to chip a tire power braking! LOL! Now I'm burning BOTH tires without power braking...

Now go out and try that 06 GT! LOL!

Yeah it was most definitely an automatic...same as my 94...

BUT OH MAN...I went back tonight and tested an 03 Cobra Convertible with the supercharged 4.6L and oh my gawd....what a car. And they wanted the same price for it as for the new 06 GT coupe I was looking at. Unfortunately the 06 GT they have is only in the showroom gotta wait about a week for the 06's to be delivered....oh well, the cobra has my attention.

PS....guess this is a pesky tech forum so...

Anyone know if the auto GTs have the same nasty lag down low that the auto v6's???

You might want to ask the guys in the GT forum.. If I can remember correctly, it does.. Like scrming mentioned, I think all this is cleared up after a SCT-2 tune..

The Cobra Vert is an awsome car.. If you can work a good deal on it, I say go for it! :nice:

I dont have the new mustang gt, but ive driven one, definately rides nicer than my 03 cobra, but i could probably take the gt in the quarter mile if i started in 2nd gear :) If power is what you want, get the 03, for another $500 you get 63rwhp more. If you want something that is "fast" and rides nice, get the gt. (i only test drove the vert, no coupes)

The GT's do have some lag... just not as bad... And the shifting is pretty soft... both of these can be fixed with and X-Cal2... LOL

We got a 06 Mustang V6 yesterday and I noticed the bad lag in power on take off too. After it gets going the power is pretty darn good though. If I buy the Predator or SCT tuner does the custom tune it needs to get rid of this lag come with it already? I have never used one of those tuners before and I was wondering how easy it is to use. If it's easy I will pick one up.
If I can just get rid of that lag then it will be almost perfect :)

X-Cal2 will cure your lag problem... It's incredibly easy to use... Plug it into your ODB -II port underneath the steering wheel and following the instructions on the little LCD screen... it will also improve your shifting...

Alternative Auto (www.alternativeauto.com) has a before and after dyno graph of a V6 automatic... you can see the dramatic increase in Torque! (The lag is caused by the computer controlled torque limiters... )

Here's the graph:

Wow cool thanks a lot.
Ok another question now, Do I buy the X-Cal 2 directly from them or from SCT? If I buy it from Alternative Auto it comes with thier specific tune they made right? So if I get it from the speed shop near me it will have a different tune that they made themselves? I see it says it comes with 3 tunes when you buy it so the place you buy it from puts those 3 tunes in themselves which are differnt according to what gas quality you use?

SCT does not sell directly to the public...so yes, you need to buy from one of their dealers...

I'm not sure how each dealer comes up with their different tunes... I do know that Lidio (alternative auto) really built his tune from the ground up... I in fact had bought my X-Cal2 from else where and bought only the "tunes" from Lidio.. His tune was noticably more complete than the one I had... His 89 Octane shaved .25 off my 0-60 time versus the 93 Octane I was running...

As far as buying a X-Cal2 from a shop near you... I guess it depends on how much dyno tuning you plan on doing and how much modding... A lot of adjustments can be made via the internet... Your tuner will have you do some datalogging, make adjustments and then can e-mail you the new tune... you just need a USB cable to hook the X-Cal2 to your PC... and download Extreme Tune from SCT (for free)

Ok I saw some of your other posts saying you were now able to spin the tires even in 2nd gear so I am sold on getting it from Alternative Auto because i wanna do the same thing but the damn car won't let me :D
How did you buy just the tune from him and how much was it? If I can do the tunes over the internet that is fine with me.
When you bought yours how many tunes came with it and when you first used it did it save your stock tune to be able to revert back to it at any time?
I really appreciate your help on this as I am seriously wanting to get this but I have some questions about it first.

stanmckinney, just reflash to stock. Someone on TMS took his car in with a performance tune, and asked they guys if they could detect it, and they said no. So just to be safe, flash back to stock and you got nothing to worry bout.

jonkatz, u hittin that at the track? thats pretty impressive, cant wait to get my xcal, tryin to figure out where to get it right now.

Yep at Memphis Motorsports Park. I'll try to scan my time slip at work Monday.
Also, I have had my car in for work twice and they never did say anything to me but then again it wasn't motor work that I had done.
