Can someone give me a little advice on what cam I can use in a stock 1990 5.0 that will have good low end power? I have a E303 in it now but im looking for a little more lope and low to mid range torque. I took the fuel injection off and I am running a duel plane intake with a 600cfm carb. I also have large tube short headers and a T-5 transmission. It also has the heart shaped heads ( E6SE ) which now I understand are not that good of a head. I am looking to go to a GT40 head in the near future. Any healp on what cam I can use in this engine would be great. Thanks

wait to get new heads (afr 165s) then get a custom cam :nice:

What is better GT-40 or GT-40P? And will they both work on a stock NONE HO 5.0? I dont know what the diferance is between the 5.0 and 5.0HO. What makes it a HO?

Camshaft, forged pistons (till '92, '93 changed to hypereutectics), tubular stainless steel exhaust manifolds, and that's about it.

Both are good heads and both are getting scarce as new parts. Plenty of used out their though. If you are gonna spend money to buy heads, I'd suggest buying somethign better yet used. Thumpers ported E7TE (stock 5.0 HO) heads are better than both the GT40 and GT40P heads the out of the box. The GT40P will require special headers to the the spark plug location.

Any of the FRPP alphabet cams will work well with the GT40, GT40P or Thumpers ported heads. The B303 (I have one) will have lots more lope, but will give up a little lowend torque in exchange for a little more top end hp. I'd actually go with the TrickFlow Stage 1 cam in your combo as described with any of these heads.

What do you think of the F303 cam? Im not looking for top end as its a truck and im sure it would not like hi speed LOL. Im just looking for better off the line and pulling power as I do still pull my boat with it. It goes pretty good now but as we all know we need MORE POWER!! LOL Thanks for the help.

Well, my brother just put a 418W in his Ranger. It has the TF3 cam. Should turn about 120 in the quarter I figure.

For low end and midrange power, something as close to stock or stock is actually your best bet IMO. Someone will likely give you a stock cam or you can buy the small Comp Cams XE264HR-12.

Ok, but stock? What about GT40 heads and a F303 cam? Would that be a good combination? ................................

I have 3 E6SE heads all re-built if someone need that number. 2 of them are on my truck now with no problems. They sup... have new springs in them also.

It'd work fine. The F303 is more of a mid to upper RPM cam.

the easyist waty to determin if its an HO is to look at the firing order...if it goes 1-3.... then its HO, but if its 1-5..... then it is LO

if you have an e303 cam then you probally have an HO motor, for it is roller

I know its not an HO motor. I had to change the firering order to the HO for this cam. The 5.0 from 85 to 92 where pretty much all roller lifter from what i understand no matter if it was an HO or not. There is a noise in the engine somewhere also and i dont know where its coming from. First i thought it was a bad water pump so I took off the belt that runs everything and it was still there. It a weird noise ( not a knocking noise ) just a rotating asebley noise. Im thinking it might be a cam bearing or from the distributor. I changed the gear on the dis and it was still there. Any thoughts on what it may be? Thanks

What have you done to the suspention? Before you go looking for more tourque, I would do some upgrading to the rear, like putting in a '91-'92 4.0 rear....8.8 with a 3.55 l/s. If you already have it then nevermind :D . As for heads, I have heard ALOT of ppl on here talking about the thumper heads so me personally, I am considering a set myself when the mulah permits. Don't know how to help you on a cam thougfh seeing as how I don't know anything aboutr them myself.

The only thing done to susp is i put a posi in the stock rearend. They say the stock rearend will hadle about 300hp as long as you dont dump the clutch all the time, which I dont. I did hear about changeing to an Exsporer rear end and they say it will bolt right up. I have 373's in it now ( stock ) and I think I would stay to that as the RPM's are pretty good. 65mph and its doing about 2000rpm's. What exacly are THUMPER heads? Some one else talk about them but im not sure realy what they are and what you have to do to them. Thanks for the input guys.

....stock cam. An F cam is a pretty big power adder cam. I think money would be better spent on some Gt40 heads. Leave the E cam in there. The E is an all around good cam. Your carb set up is the problem, not the cam. If you have a 5spd and 302 in a ranger it should blow the tires off in 1st, 2nd, and third. Sounds to me like tuning issues.

As for the exploder rear being just a bolt up, yea it is but becafeful..... the '91-'94 rears are about 3/4- 1 1/2" wider than a ranger and the '95 up are about 3" wider. But all is the same you just need two driver side spring plates tho. (the exploders moubnt on top of the leafs and the two drivers side platres keeps you with the staggered shocks) I think you may have to either change out your d/s of at least the pinion yoke cause all sploders are 8.8. The axles in the 8.8 are the same as in the 7.5 it is just that the carier is a little stronger.

Can't believe I gave up the range but it was worth it to get the stang.

Thansk for the information PHATT on the rear end. I dont plan on changing to that any time soon, Like I said I dont beat on it so untill I blow the stock one I think I will leave well enought alone.

QDRHRSE... Dont get me wrong my Ranger has plenty of power to smoke the tires, and also I pulled a 23 foot camper with this without any problems besides wind as the camper weighed more than the truck. Im just looking for more power, as my wife said to me... You wount ever be happy with what the truck has.... And I say NOPE!!!! give me more power.....
So F303 and GT40 heads? Think that will add some power?

Thanks guys again for the input and help

PLEASE don't ever do that again. I see and hear about fatal accidents all the time because people are towing with a vehicle that's not big/heavy enough to pull what's behind it. A 23 foot camper/trailer should never be behind anything smaller than a F250. Sorry to go off topic, but this is something I'm adiment about. When (not if) you have an incident or an actual accident, I hope that you don't injure or kill anyone one else on the road around you. It's not just your safety, it's the innocent people driving around you.
