is a 85 5.0 worht puttin any money into?

lol..fishhawk....someone already got me with that. I am still new, and I was searching around and did not notice many resources for this year stang, plus all my mod mags seemed to start at 86. And in my area all you see is 88 and above stangs and to throw salt in the wound I could not even find a chilton mag for my year at any autozone. So you cant blame me for doubting my purchase. but after seeing the 4-eyed website, I am now a believer.

You can find just about anything you want for the car with the exception of the side molding. If the molding on your car is good protect it with your life. I've looked everywhere for it and haven't found any in the entire country. I have used all the parts retailers in the country and have found Texas Mustang and 50 Resto to be good but as far as finding OEM parts CJ Pony is the best (In my opinion) http://www.cjponyparts.com/.
As far as mods go I would look into gears and exhaust first. If you have a 5 spd, most likely you have 2.73 gears. A set of 3.55's of 3.73's will really wake it up. The weak link in your car will be the 7.5 rear end. Its why Ford put the 8.8 in the GT the following year. Try not to spend much money on the 7.5. It would make much more sense to find a used 8.8 and throw that in then to rebuild the weak 7.5. I'm one of those "old guys" that is the original owner of my 85, and even though I have babied it I had to replace the 7.5 twice before I woke up and gutted a used 8.8 and put that in last summer. If you have any question about the car feel free to IM me.

sure!! im goin to rt.66 today. just lettin ya know that time is with a 1200 launch spinning on street tires....no bottle.
Can't make it to 66 any time soon. Wish I could, I love that track. No NOS for me either. My times are with a DR and spinning in first and second in 95 degree heat at US41. Ran a little slower MPH last time out at NMRA at Joliet. Hook .... Bog, LOL.

Yeah exhaust is a good starting pt. But I still think the best return is gears. A bit more involved but alota return.....

Like mentioned above, once you get reading around FEP.com and places like stangnet and allfordmustangs youll come to see that the magazine adds are for the more simple black and white minded modders. "It says 95 gt in the add so thats it...". Na, there are tons of interchangable parts between 79-93 stangs and even some parts that come off Lincolns, mercurys, etc. Just read and soak everything up. In no time youll be putting together mods from all kinda cars...

what year do you need it for? that moulding is common out here in the yards, what's it worth to you? PM

Hi Guy!

I had an 86 and basically loved it - but wished it had .....
Here's the scoop: Unless you plan on a complete drive train upgrade - don't waste your money! The 85's had a puppy rear in it (7.5") wish is fragile like glass - they changed this in 86! You'll probably have to change your tranny also T5's are weak especially with slicks. Your 302 well is the only salvageable part depending on mileage!

The 87-88's had speed density flow meters, the 89-93's mass air meters(the prefered as these adapt well to performance upgrades etc.)

Carbs are nice - but I beg to differ for performance(the Edelbrock performance RPM11) matched the horsepower of carburation but beat it out in torque. I'm only using the Cobra at present but am upgrading to RPM11.

It's up to you - but I've been doing quite well with my stock headed/cammed 302
Hope I was of help! Good luck with your decision!

all an opinion, of course, but 85-89 t5's are all the same, no reason to not buy the car for this.

four eyed front ends, especially 85/86 are the meanest (debateably) of the fox years, and look the best.

a swap to an 8.8 is a direct bolt on, and won't even take a full saturday.

Agreed. Don't worry about the trans until your running high horsepower numbers. I'm still running the original clutch and trans and have over 280rwhp. After you swap in an 8.8 you can start thinking about upgrading the clutch and flywheel. The 85 has a 10". The 86 and up have 10.5" clutch's. This isn't urgent unless it goes out on you. If you need a new clutch you might as well throw in a 10.5. The only thing that needs to change is the flywheel which must also be larger. But once again, everything is a direct bolt on.

I agree that the T5's are all the same, that the 8.8 is a few hour bolt-in and the clutches are different 10 vs 10.5. I even agree on the looks!
It's just that you're gonna have to consider the labor and trouble - all I'm saying is you can bypass that by buying 87-93. They have the T5's to contend with also - just less OA troubles

well this is the deal.....I had 4k, to make a purchase of a mustang. We have a auction here in town where I can get 5.0's fairly cheap. But I bought this 85 instead. So that leaves me 3500 to trick it out with. Or I can go to auction tomorrow and try my luck like I intended. If I decide to trick it out (which I think I have) I need to put together my shopping list basically. So that is the reason for all my n00bish questions all of a sudden.

So far I have my exhaust inked in for purchase, just trying to see where to go from there. All your advices are greatly appreciated.

But he already bought the car and he only paid $500 for it. Its sounds like it is his first car or close to it. I can't think of a better car to get started with when it comes to mods. No fuel injection or computer to worry about. Just old fashioned hp.

Oh for what it is worth, this is the stang I bought for 500.00

Nope not my first car...Or first mustang for that matter. But I have always been a more show than go type of guy. This time I am going to flip the script and go performance.

lol, just noticed the ghetto setting on this pic....this is my friends house. I should have cropped out his home gym...lol

Hey webshot - looks likes a nice car! If performance is not an issue - then nothing I said matters. Enjoy your ride, and good luck with your car!

I like the four eyes for looks - they are getting old and limited in availability compared to 87-93's.
