Do I need an intercooler?? pingingggggg

my tune is based off of a SCT custom chip.... This was done weeks ago, which netted me 512 rwhp at 11 psi using an 8 inch crank and 3.33 blower pulley.... anyways, on the way home from getting it tuned, it pinged at 4500+... Of course as soon as i heard it ping, i let off and that was it........ I called the place and they told me that theyll pull more timing out up top and that should fix it free of charge....

Sooo i went there yesterday and they took my chip and pulled 3 degrees more out uptop... before i left, he told me to take it for a test ride... I did so and it rippped down the road... 3rd gear pulled alll the way through... after i told him it was allright, i drove home and within 30 minutes, 4th gear uptop started to ping.....

This tells me what? my discharge is wayyyyy too hott??? It seems like its happening after the car is being ran long

I then called the place again and he was telling me about running a vortech aftercooler (one thing i dont wanna spend 1500 dollars on), or an intercooler.....BUT, before i did that he told me he wanted to try one more thing... He wants me to disconnect my ACT wire but leave the ACT in......Take my discharge pipe off and drill it for a 01 lightnight or 95 mustang ACT and run the wires to that.... This way he can pull timing based off the discharge air...

How does that sound??? Think that would work??? Do you guys really thing i may need to resort to an intercooler??? Is there anything else that can GREATLY drop my discharge air going to the motor???

Some suggested that it is time for a fuel system at my 513 mark, but i tend to disagree because my air fuel was 11.5 flat up to redline.....

let your opinions loose

My SCT chip from JMS did the same thing. Even though they pulled timing & added fuel out in the upper RPM's it would ping. So I eneded up sellling it to try a different route. Bad thing is I never did get another tuning device and the car ran better on the stock EEC. All I did was add an retard device to my Crane box, set my base timing to 10* and fuel pressure to 40-42#'s and was done with it. Never could get get the SCT chip right, even after sending it back. I was sorta pee'd off after spending $300+ on it, to only get a rev limit extender.

If I would of had a dyno tune it may have been better, but didn't want to drive 350 miles to get it done.

i second this!!!

very reasonable price too and you "can" use windsheild washer fluid with it http://www.snowperformance.net/

either that or get one of those ebay intercoolers that are like ~$160. alot of the turbo mustnag guys use those for DIY builds at over 15 psi

i was just thinking about a n intercooler and for my setup i think it would be tooo much piping/boost loss for what its worth..

You guys are really fond on methanol???? if i use that, im going to use the AFM mr freeze, this way i have no worries of having a pump that can fail... If i do this, will i need to go back for a redyno?? the guys at the shop dont like methanol, nor does the guy at Downs Ford, right near me..... whacha think??? can i use methanol, not to be tuned FOR methanol, but as an additive to my tune just to drop intake temps??

Doesnt methanol have to be refilled when depleted? that kind of leaves you dependant on it which i think is lame. You should definatelly get some kind of heat exchanger for the air, that boost coming straight out the SC is probably 400 degrees F. I would invest in an aftercooler and keep the tuning and chip.

It will make a huge difference if the tune is right for it. If you dont retune, it will bog and probably not run very good. You can run a way more ragged edge tune with it too. It lasts a while too on the Snow, SMC, Alky Control Kits. You can usually get them with a low warning light. If you want to do some reading on it, check www.turbobuick.com, they have been using it for YEARS!

The choices are pretty simple --- 1) you can keep having them dick around with the tune - pulling timing and adding fuel - that's gonna hurt power/torque; 2) you can do nothing and likely hurt head gaskets, pistons, cylinder heads or even have the block split down the middle (if it's a stock block, at your power levels you've got a good shot that will happen anyway); 3) you can water/alcohol inject -- keep your tank topped up; 4) you can aftercool.

There's a reason most anything these days from the factory with boost is aftercooled. Anything you can do to reduce intake charge temp (all else equal) helps everything - increases efficiency, increases power, allows more timing to be run with less chance of detonation - it's a win/win/win. Is it work/$ to install? Yup. Is it worth it? Only you can decide. But if it were mine and boosted - it would definitely have a charge cooler on it. Keep in mind the tune job will have to be done over again as EVERYTHING changes with the cooler charge.

A friend of mine is going through the same thing right now and we went through the same options for him. I recommended an aftercooler and higher octane fuel.

Also the hotter the temp outside the more chance of pinging you will have. So you may have a winter tune and a summer tune.

thanks alot guys... I dont understand tho.. it just seems like this is just me... I see alot of blower guys on this forum run nothin but a blower and its MY car thats gotta be the one to ping.... grr
Your not the only one fighting pinging, trust me. Heres a shot of my buddies engine that is dealing with the same thing.

He is only running a total of 20 degrees of timing and running 18 lbs of boost from the YSI trim on a safe rich tune.

here's mine same setup...

what rpms are they @ ?

1500 bucks for an aftercooler, or 6000+K for a new motor, heads, blah blah blah... It's well worth it to me, Joe. Do it right the FIRST time, and reap the rewards for a reliable car that doesn't blow headgaskets every other week. :nice:

Methanol is made to run more timing and less fuel for more HP... Not really to PREVENT detonation. It's made to make more power... Not to cure an underlying (sp) problem.

well obviously if its allowing you to run more timing then you can ever run without it, isnt it theorriatically (sp) preventing detonation???

get the snow performance kit and run it with straight water ....alot of the 4.6 guys over on modulardepot.com are doing this with straight water injection , the methanol requires retuning , if you just spray the water in , you get the cooling affect without needing the retune ..............
