Fit and Finish - How's your's holding up?

I traded a 2002 BMW 330CI for my 05 GT in October 2004. The BMW was a fantastic car, but not better than the Mustang - just a different kind of ride. ...After more than a year, I can honestly say that that it is one of my favorites in 32 years of buying new cars. And I don't miss the BMW at all!

You are my brother from another mother! I sold my '02 BMW in April so I could get my Stang and I feel the same way. Who would have ever thought that Ford would be taking away from BMW's market share?! :flag:

Overall I am very happy with the fit and finish after a year. The only problem I am having is the black plastic around the doors is turning chalky white. I think it is from me hitting it on accident with wax. I am going to put some Mother's Back to Black on it. That stuff is great.

Did the same thing on my car, accidentally got wax on black plastic trim which greyed it out. Mother's Back to Black does fix the problem, but it's not a permanent fix. I have to re-apply it every two to three weeks to keep things looking nice and black.

What I've found is that better waxes don't seem to grey the plastic when you accidentally get it on the trim. Mother's California Gold wax and Meguiar's NXT wax just wipe right off with no harm. What greyed out my trim was the generic wax that the dealership gave me when I bought the car. :Damnit:

Don't use Back to Black. I have the same problem and Back to Black didn't fix it at all. In fact, I haven't found anything yet that really works better than just using a tooth brush and scrubbing with soap and water. However, someone told me peanut butter works. I'm going to try it. Can't see it hurting anything.

I’ve had a v6 convertible since April, 7000 miles and no squeaks, rattles, noise of any kind. It is the tightest convertible I have ever had, and the previous verts included Jaguar, Cadillac, Buick, Z28, and Benz. In contrast with a number of other posters here, I like the cheap plastic interior, it handles the sun real well and the tan color doesn’t show the dust that gets everywhere if you spend the afternoon zipping down a country road.

I couldn’t be happier with the ‘Stang, even the little v6 is adequate. It’s never going to hammer you back into the seat, but for cruising around on a sunny day with your wife its perfect.

:nice: >> Have a galfriend who HAD a 330ci, I hate to say it but we took it on a 7 hour road trip to Long Beach, CA to catch a cruiseliner and THAT car was the most uncomfortable little thing I had ever had the misfortune to ride in. Harmon Karden stereo, all kinds of interior bling, but no thanks. I'll take my Stang anyday.

7,300 miles - Born 10/04 - no complaints at all! :hail2:

I've had my gt since March and have no squeeks, rattles, or any TSB issues. For those with squeaks, I've heard that if you lube the car with peanut butter that it solves the problem.

StangOwner2B is on track with what I'm getting at. I will look into renting a Mustang for maybe a weekend.

I did test drive both a GT manual and V6, the first two to come into the Causeway Ford here back in late October '04.

From a driving perspective, with the GT, in 40* dry weather the car hooked incredibly on asphalt with only slight rear kick-out to the left, but what made me really impressed was that the car didn't make me feel unconfident. Some cars are just squirrelly if you get on them and that effects your confidence in controlling the car or the car controlling you. The Mustang suspension, stock was quite a confidence builder.

I haven't owned any other Mustangs, I've been around and raced people who own and work on them. I know the Mustang wasn't designed to be a luxo-ride, but the Ford say it's a $30k interior in a $20k car. So I was expecting some better quality materials.

One of the first pitfalls I noticed was the placement of the seat belts. You pretty much have to choke yourself to reach around, like you normally would in any other car to grab the seat belt and bring it around your torso.

The other things that struck me as kinda "eh", was the steering wheel design. I know what they were going for, but it looks like a over-sized Playskool wheel with big center button. If they put some other coincentric rings around the center emblem or something to break up that large center button, I don't think it'd look so strange to me. Maybe someone will make a aftermarket billet wheel that will retrofit. :)

Also, the shifter for the automatic..ugh.. come on Ford, it's plastic in a crummy spot. I hope B&M or Hurst makes some sort of bolt-in replacement that is a bit more sturdy and signifies some more of the drive-train's brawn rather then cheapo plastic trying to impersonate aluminum.

Another thing I did was to tap on the top of the dash board, just sounded like a hollow plastic can lol

The door panel speaker grilles look a bit gaudy to me, as opposed to a nice contoured panel with matching contoured-to-match grilles.

Most all of you would likely say I'm splitting hairs, granted this stuff isn't going to stop me from buying the car when the wallet and credit score is ready, but I was just curious how the rest of you felt and how your entirely new Mustang has been holding up to real world use.

I still believe that Ford should carry over some of the materials used on the Mazda line. Why not get a great performing, $20-$30k Mustang with solid interior materials from a sub-$20k car that's made in the same factory? It would bring the Mustang upto another level in terms of overall quality.

heck, not for nothing to anyone here that owns one, but even the new Vette, at $60k+ when you get into the interior, aside from the fancy door-locks and pretty looking gauges, makes you wonder where all the money went.

Well, just reached 1000mi and I already have two paint chips. One on the front of my drivers side fender and one on my passenger side roof. This makes me very sad. And every sunday I have to go to the bar to watch the Raider game because they suck too much to be on local TV and when I drive home it makes the car smell like smoke. That also makes me sad. Few scratches on the interior too. I've tried to baby this car and look whats happened. I some times wonder what shape it'd be in if I didn't baby it...Hell, I still have the paper floor mats in it.

Only way to prevent dings and scratches is to never drive the car. Mustangs aren't museum pieces, they're relatively cheap, good bang-for-the-buck performance cars that are also great daily drivers. Don't worry about the little things, just drive and have fun!

Steel, if you had that many issues just from test driving, the Mustang probably isn't for you. Build quality, fit and finish, materials and perceived quality are considerably higher than the 2000 GT I owned. However, there IS still somewhat of a tradeoff for getting the Mustang's performance at a relatively low price. In the long run, you'd probably be happier with something else with higher build quality and less performance. If you want great build quality AND performance, you have to take a significant step up in price beyond the GT.

Oh and I also took in my car for a gas tank issue but it seems that Ford deems it "Normal" for gas to spill out some times after filling it up.

But I'm sure if you ask any Mustang owner none of them like dings or scratches. I know its not something I can easily stop but I just dont like it. I've seen some guy with a Lime Green GT that has had thin clear pieces put all over his car to protect it. Said it cost him over $1000 but said its protected his car rather well.

Agreed, I don't like scratches and dings either. But you can't let it take the fun out of the car. :)

Paint's sprayed too thin? Take it in and have them repair under warranty! Don't stop til they get it right.

I got mine in March and now have about 8500 on it. So far it's all good except for a rattle that seems to be coming from the driver side speaker housing in the trunk. I hear it when I hit a bump in the road. Not sure how to deal with it since it's held by plastic clips rather than something I can tighten.
