Intermittant detonation?

Anyone got a clue what might be wrong here????

Occasionally on hard acceleration of 3/4 to WOT, I am hearing what sounds like a diesel engine from under my hood.
I assume it is detonation.:notnice:

The problem does not seem to be associated with outside air temperature or a particular tank of gas.

I had the A/F mixture checked, and it is running well within safe limits.
The sound was present durring the check!

I have had my Xcal 1 timing bumped back closer to the cars normal set point, AND started running 89 octane gas.
(The program calls for 87)
But the problem pops up from time to time.

Any ideas on what I'm hearing or how to fix it????

i have the problem too, going in oin thursday. ill let you know what they say. i got john forbes working on it this time, he is the #3 tech in the country....according to some ford testing.

Detonation

I get this when I'm driving it pretty hard, gets detonation right after I shift into the next gear(i.e. done with first, then shift into second and lay into the throttle). Seems to happen between 1st/2nd shift and 2nd third. I'm almost thinking it's a drive by wire/ecu problem. The revs are definitely high enough that I shouldn't get detonation but I get just a half a second of detonation in these cases.

I have the same problem running 87 ,89, but not 93 which makes me think the water temp my be causing the problem, I'am planning on going to a 160 degree thermostat

I have a 160 degree thermostat but have not installed it yet.

I'm also considering an oil seperator unit for the EGR system.
They say it can help with detonation.

Gotta find out what is causing this!:Damnit:
Last time I checked engines are quite expensive.

I took my car into the dealership and they said nothing was wrong. So, I guess I'll put some 87 in it and go drive the hell out of it, and see if I can't blow it up. I mean they said I could run 87 in it haha.

how much was the 160 degree thermostat, can I get it at pepboys or auto zone? , and what is the stock one set at? is there anyway of replaying it without dumping the coolent all over the place.? hahh

The stock Thermostat is set at 180 degrees.

I got my 160 degree thermostat by special order through Autozone.
It is made by hypertech and called Powerstat. PN: Hyp1010 (?)
Good luck on ordering it.... it was a pain for me.

As for install.... it looks like it is going to be a mess unless you can drain the system before. YUCK!

Thanks for the info mpentico.. with my prochager that thing gets hot fast and lose 20-30rwhp =-/..

LUCKY U with that Procharger!!!!

This new 3V engine is a real heat sponge.

I figured the aluminum block would dissapate heat better, but ?

With a blower, I'd definetly use a lower temp thermostat and consider looking at a PCV oil seperator unit. Could'nt hurt. Might save your car someday.

ENJOY....
