alright im not sure if this should be in talk or tech but whatever, ok im debating doing my first engine build in alittle while, im curious if i should shell out the 2 grand for the trick flow kit or should i build my own setup? any opinoins? ( im working on getting the money together now) and if i should build my own, what are some good setups ( give complete list of parts if you can, h/c/i injectors tb maf, fuel pump rockers, valve springs, anything i would need to change) thanks, again, sorry if this sould be in talk

Don't really think that you should let someone make this decision for you but I will give you my opinion anyway. I just finished my rebuild and I went with the Trickflow Track Heat kit. It included heads, trackheat intake, stage 1 cam, timing chain, gaskets, pushrods, 1.6 roller rockers and valve covers (which I didn't use). I went back and calculated how much I saved and if I remember right it was in the neighborhood of 200 dollars. The supporting components I added were 255 lph fuel pump, 30 # injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 70 mm tb and egr (edelbrock), 76mm MAF & intake tube (C&L) and MSD 6A ignition box w/ blaster TFI coil. I am very pleased with how the car runs. Makes good power over 2500 or so. Haven't had it tuned yet but I think I can get more out of it. Runs a little warm with the stock radiator though. It was really nice having everything in one kit that I know was meant to be paired together. Sets the mind at ease a little.

Start reading mags, see what others have done, set a goal of where you want to be HP wise and look at parts, thats the best way, there is diff styles and looks, some work better w SC combos while other NA. If you just want 300 HP then go buy any of the kits edelbrock trick flow ect and youll be there, if you want more.......then research time.

I think that you can't go wrong with the TFS kit. It's practical and you know exactly what kind of performance to expect- good performance too! Plus, they do all the parts shopping for you. There are a lot implicit cost savings that you get with that kit.

:Word: TFS is a proven combo, let the engineers do the work for you! That is unless one is just intent on being different!

I would disagree again.

the tfs kit is crap.

sorry to those who have it, and i LIKE tfs products.

i do not think it's the great deal everyone claims.

so, it can give you 300/310 at the wheels...........bfd!
gt40's, a cobra intake, the right cam, and some long tubes can do the same thing......

if you spend THAT much on a top end kit, you better be lookin for a bit more power, or your just wasting money.

talk to jay allen @ camshaftinnovations.com. ask him about the 18* canfields for ~1200 bux! add say a perf rpm for 500 more....... a custom cam for 370 (for a GOOD one) and run ircles around all the stage one tfs top end guys, for slightly more...

anyone with a "street car" suspension and a tfs top end ON A 302/306 run quicker than 12.20's here? cuz after all that money you should be in the high to mid 11's, and have AS GOOD OR BETTER street manners.

I didn't buy the whole TFS kit, i did buy the heads for only $995 NEW and only spent $139 on the TFS stage one which is a great OTS cam. Then i spent very little money on an Explorer intake which i am going to get ported. My combo runs very strong, i don't think you can go wrong with TFS products. I can't justify spending almost $400 on a cam that will give you a maybe 10-20 rwhp, save that money and get some suspension.

The Stage one cam is a better cam in my opinion than the e303, it's dual pattern and it's cheaper. To be honest i don't know if it is emissions legal, my brother asked me the same question earlier today... I thought the Trick Flow kits were 50 state street legal but i could be wrong. I don't have to worry about emissions testing in Iowa. Explorer stuff should pass, don't explorers have to pass emissions? The heads and intake should pass, it would be the cam that would probably be the factor in passing emissions but don't quote me because i don't know much of anything about passing emissions. I purchased my intake on the corral classifieds.

The trickflow kit is 'ok' for the average enthusiest. I had it and it ran ok but if I was smarter back then when I bought it I could have gone a LOT faster with not much more cost by piecing a package together. I dynoed 304hp/339tq and ran high 12's @ 107.

id try and make my own instead of just buyin the package.... ask around... see if anyone has a upper and lower intake layin around... maby someone went from a fule injected 302 to a carbed 351 adn has no need for upper and lower, mass air, throttle body, injectors... all that good stuff. thats what i didn and i lucked out. i picked up a trick flow track heat upper and lower, 70mm throttle body w/egr spacer. 75mm mass air, 24lb injectors. all for 600 adn all under a month old. i had planed out doin a hci and from findin that deal i just saved myself about 600... u could probly do the same if ur patient. id say trick flow track heat, twisted wedge heads, adn a cam, and a bottle.....:Word:

i dont believe the tf intake is CARB legal, at least when i looked into it i couldn't find a CARB #.

i say go with the thumper combo hehehe. http://www.hunterstyle.com/thumper/combos.php combo # 3. his heads and cam with an cobra or performer intake would work nicely. then with the rest of the money you would save you can get your c&l tube, maf, tb and egr. hit up ebay for a deal. i just got a performer manifold, bbk 65mm tb, bbk egr, injectors, rails and feul pump for $350. good luck and happy hunting.

I like Thumper heads and have owned a set. Unfortunately, a pair of Thumpers with just about any combo will not make the same power as the TFS combo. Thumper will likely tell you that himself. A stock head just can't compete with the TFS.

nosmat-

I am not willing to have another "great debate" about how much hp you can make with with a GT40 combo but I will say this- 1 out of 100 people maybe less, ever get 300rwhp out of a combo with stock GT40 heads whereas any TFS combo that is installed correctly with the recommended complement parts will make more than 300. For the money the TFS set is absolutely the most sure fire way to see 300hp.
