Holy crap, I'm so annoyed at paint chips! I swear at this car is a rock magnet. I definitely found three new little chips on my car today. It's so frustrating! This car seems like it chipped more than my 99, I wonder if Ford changed the paint or clearcoat or something. I guess I'll have to bust out the touch up paint then wax it and hopefully it all blends together okay.

Would a better paint job and/or more clearcoat help avoid these chips? Just for future reference?

I have a solution for you. I sell a product called stone guard it's made by 3m (go figure) it's about a 1mm thick and applies directly to the paint. It is clear so all you can really see of it is a small seam where it ends usually 6-8" up the hood. Much nicer than a bra and cheaper than painting your car every year.

Stone chips will happen if you drive your car especially on the highway... There is no avoiding it.

I know they don't show was bad as on a dark coloured car but it's just frustrating cause I know they are there! I'm sure we all have things about our cars that only we know about and no one else would ever notice that but us!

More clear coat would make your clear more brittle. Like glass. If you do get your car repainted I would recommend using a plasticizer in the clear. Today's clear coats are urethane clear coats. The plastiziser would have a little more give to stone chipping.

Speedfreak. Although the 3M product would help with stone chips. It does discolor the paint. Well let me correct myself. The paint that doesnt have the 3M product on it, will discolor from oxidation. If you ever take the 3M stuff off, you will notice a huge diffrence. Just judging from experience

Interesting, well I guess time will tell what happens. I definitely don't plan on getting the whole car painted until most of the major mechanical stuff is done. That way the paint won't get accidently ruined while working on the car.

Hmmm, so I guess my Mopar that had 6 coats of clear was full of chips then huh?

It doesn't make it more brittle at all. If the clear is allowed to cure properly you won't have an issue. Although if it isn't prepped properly then that is anouther issue. More like stone chunks, not chips.

Today's clears are way harder then they used to be as well. Adding anything to the paint will make more issues as well. Anything that makes the paint more flexible to resist cracking or breaking on impact will make the paint very hard to work with as well if a future repair is needed.

Yup your right but with a life of 7 years and matched that with it being on a silver car it will be ok with a quick polish.
