AFR or Trickflow top end? please read!

I am in the middle of building a new stroker for my 89' and need so advice. I have a DSS 347 with the pro-lite pistons. I was set on using my brand new AFR 165's (which may be for sale now) and my edelbrock performer intake. I got my new Summit in the mail the other day and saw that Trickflow is now offering a complete top end setup. I was interested in the Track heat kit. It has the Twisted wedge heads, track heat intake, cam, pushrods, RR's and timing chain set for i believe its $2400 or something like that. I was wondering what anyone had to say about this?? any input would be great. If I do go this way I will probably sell my B-cam, AFR's, and Performer intake which should be able to offset a decent amount of the cost of this kit. Anyone with any input would be great as I am looking to get this done soon to get my car up and running by the spring time. Thanks a lot guys.

165's are a little small for your 347. I would go with 190cc head because you have increased the stroke and bore. The trickflow track heat package is good but with a 347 you can do much better. My opinion is to sell your afr's for a dart, afr, or even a victor jr head.

and also go with a different cam, ford's alphabet cams are way outdated, go with a comp cam, crane, etc or even a custom grind to your combo for the best gain.
 
165's are only good to about .520" valve lift ...
Anything above this point will not add additional benefit for you without porting the heads.

What cc chamber do you have?

165's will perform pretty damn well on a 347 relative to what you may be accustomed to. However, I think the TW's or the 185's are a better match to your 3.4" stroker.

The Performer intake is a good match to the 165's though ...
I think what a lot of us are saying is you are leaving a little bit of power on the table without destroying driveability.

Get a cam that lifts to about .500", but with alot of duration to keep them valves open sooner/later so you'll have more 'area under the curve' so to speak and allow the smaller 165cc + 1.90 intake valves to feed the stroker. Should do ya fine, the 165's are able to feed a 347 to about 6000 rpms with an appropriate cam. I seen ads in some mags Comp Cams has some new grinds specifically for 331-347 stroker small blocks, check 'em out

thats a good alternative if he doesn't have the money for bigger heads, but if he sells his current heads and gets one of those new 331-347 stroker comp cams, he will have a very fast driveable car. And no doubt he will too with the combo posted above. Its just there is some power left on the table.
 
If you can swing it, summit now sells ported TFS heads (done by TEA i believe). There was a write up about them in a 5.0Mustang and super fords mag over the summer. Chassis dyno on a 347 with box stock TFS heads the motor peaked at 6,000rpms at 375.74 hp. Torque peak was at 4,900 and was 353.56. With the ported heads from summit hp peak moved up to 6,400 and 425.95hp and torque was at 5300 and 377.15 while torque at 6400 was up 50ft lbs over the non ported heads. All they list about the combo is, "10:1 compression Pauls Automotive Engineering 347 small block with box-stock TFS heads, Victor Jr intake, Holley carb, and a custom cam of undisclosed #'s. Even after a full season of fun the car still put down 375hp to the wheels through a tremec". The motor was in an American Iron road race car.
