Has anyone done this themselves?

I was under my dash today to see how much access i have to the 4 nuts that needed to be removed. And i am just not looking forward to it at all

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to gaining more access to the nuts? im guessing that i will need to use a universal socket, but can anything be removed to ease the removal??

thanks in advance.

The stock booster works with all kinds of brake upgrades, so don't swap it unless it is an absolute must. See my sig for an example of what you can do with the stock booster.

The 94 and later units have a different bolt pattern. You can make it fit, but it requires enlarging the bolt holes and some very careful fitting.

See http://www.svo73mm.cjb.net/ for brake help - best Mustang brake site on the web.

oh i have been there, gotten a lot of advice from that site over the years.

But I am doing the entire Cobra brake upgrade, front and rear. I know i will need to upgrade the booster to at least the GT unit, which i have.

I already had the 99GT fronts, and 95 GT rears and felt the limits of the stock MC/Booster. So while the engine is out, might as well do it since i have the room.

I wish the engine had been out when I put my sn95 booster in.

I am going from memory here, and it was several years ago.
Under the dash is a nightmare. All I could do was take my time and not get frustrated.
When putting the new booster in, clearance will be tight between the booster and the strut tower. It should clear though.
I think I cut a little of the extra stud length off of the booster to make things easier. Look this over before getting out the hacksaw though, as it may not be necessary.

I did drive my car for a little bit with the stock booster and the cobra brakes. The bigger booster will provide better feel.
In all I am very happy with the bigger booster.

If you are doing the cobra brake upgrade you have to use a brake booster from a 93 cobra. You can reach the bottom nuts pretty easy but to get to the top nuts it is alot easier to drop the steering column. You can reach them with about 2 foot of extensions.

It was a bit of the pain.. had to elongate one hole in the firewall, and it slid in after fighting with it a bit. Left a few marks on the strut tower, but i wasn't too concerned so you could probably prevent that.

There is only 1 nut that gave me trouble under the dash as well, the top most passenger bolt.. good luck!

sorry, i meant the 94+ cobra brake upgrade.

i already gutted the stock PV and installed the adjustable on the firewall, just need to buy a 11,, flare nut wrench, and ill install the 3-2 port conversion.

The 93 Cobra Booster is probably the best choice for the upgrade as the stud and thread pattern are the same as the normal Fox.

yeah, that one does look like it will give me the most trouble. I am planning to elongate the proper bolt hole. Already have the nuts on the 95 booster, so should be straight forward other than the access problem.

I found that it was easiest to elongate the holes in the firewall as well as cut the studs on the booster down a little bit, but not too much or else there won't be enough threads to get the nut on all the way.

you said elongate :rlaugh:

I found that the easiest way to get to the booster nuts was to open the driver door and sit down on the ground between the door and door sill. It is more accessible that way than folding yourself into a pretzel inside the car.

If you still have a working cruse control, watch out for the vacuum release valve located on top of the brake pedal. It is easy to knock the black & yellow valve out of postion when you are working with the nuts for the booster mounting.

if you need more vacuum you might try one of those crane vacuum canisters. i changed mine to 95 brakes and didn't want to mess with the booster. it works fine now a little spongey but i dont think the lines are completely bled yet. i was thinking of getting a vacuum cannister when i put a cam in

I was thinking i might have to do that, but i have read that a few people with E and F cams are running the 94 GT/V6 booster with no issues. Hopefully my CompCams 282HR will work with it.
