Do gears make your car slower top end?

It doesn't make any sense that you would pull slower from 110 on after the gears! Could someone clarify this because I think it pulls harder top end after the gear install.

Stock gears at 110 mph you would be in 4th
With 4.10's at 110 mph you'd be in 5th
4th gear with stock gearing is lower than 5th with 4.10's , so at that speed you'd be pulling harder in 4th with the stock gears than 5th would with 4.10's

without a governer theoretically the mustang should pull 200mph... BUT... factoring in things such as wing resistance... weather... traction... type of road... etc... you will NEVER see anywhere near that...

exactly :D

so get gears no matter what! no point in having a "top speed" that high if you cant use it ;)

Got 4.10s in my auto and I've tapped the rev limiter which is 163mph. Speedo was well pegged.. and I was door to door with a 5spd with 4.30s.

5spd 5th gear = .67
auto o/d = .70

5spd + 4.30s ~= auto+4.10s...

Gears will only make you faster all around. </thread>

Before everyone gives me crap I did do a search about gears, I couldn't find a post about what I was looking for. I am new to the whole mustang thing and I am just trying to gain as much knowledge as possible. Anyway I just got an 01 with 35K on it. I already want to make it faster and its only been two weeks, its an auto so I was thinking about some 4.10's, I was just wondering will it make it slower up top from say like a 70 punch?

No. It will be more responsive. When I had 2.73's my 5th gear was almost useless. With the 3.73's, 5th gear has some pull behind it.
Yeah I was cruising 90mph on the highway and some older vette pulls up beside me and starts revving. That's a no go with me 1) b/c I'm already going fast enough for me and 2) I don't have much left in 4th and then there's 5th and well, you know what 5th is like.
BTW I have 3:73's.
I would also agree with the others. Gears are worth it, IMHO. The fun is worth a loss of pull over 110mph.
Good info p.a.p.
Hmm I have 3.73s and I would have went  . I have pulled mine to 127 (6300ish..inticated) and 5800 is about 115..6K is about 120. You could have revved back and slowed down to 70 and see if he followed. \
But I agree that 90 is already fast, I would like to be ending every race at that point, but it doesnt always happen.

gears should help during a freeway run also, as youre in your powerband more, especailly when going into 5th, instead of coming back down to 2500rpm, itll put you more at 3200rpm, and closer to your powerband.

i hate my 5th gear during a freeway race, the car pulls so nicely to 115ish at around 5500rpm in 4th, but shifting into 5th kills it, and takes forever to get into its powerband. ive hit 150, but it took really long, but at 150 it started to feel smoother cause the rpm's were coming into their powerband. from 115-135 it was major slow since it was only turning about 2.5-3k.

im going with 3.90s, 3.73s dont seem like enough of a difference to hassle, and 4.1s seem like too much if youre planning on doing any road trips.

Ok since some of you are confused, or just absolutely clueless on this, I will try and help clear it up.

Yes theoretically(sp) stock gears will allow the car a higher top end. Ok why does this not happen? One the cars power, weight, distance and the kicker resistance.

Ok so how do we overcome this? Going with a steeper gear, this will allow the motor to be in its powerband faster, and be more useful in the higher gears aka 4th and 5th gear. What does this do? It allows the car to pull harder and overcome the resistance that the stock gearing could not. The stock gear kept the motor out of the powerband in 5th gear. This is why people gain top speed on a long stretch of road because the 4th and 5th gear was more usable to obtain a higher mph as it was in the powerband, and pulling more unlike the stock gears.

My old 99 cobra on the same stretch of raod with stock gears I was able to hit 150 and that was pushing it for that lenght of distance. When I added the 4.10's I burried the speedo at 160 in the same amount if not a little less in distance on the same road. The car was still pulling in 5th gear with the 4.10's unlike the 3.27's which were useless in 5th.

Hope this answered the question

Also to combat the lack of power in 5th gear just simply add a blower. 8-10 pounds out of a KB or Vortech makes for a SEG in 5th gear if you have gears (I don't have gears so no SEG for me yet :( ). But you get the idea :D

Hey guys, lets say i dont have enough money for a blower. What other upgrade could i get that can add to the high end after i get the gears (4.10) installed. Other than an supercharger, etc. Will headers, exhaust compensate?
On a 00-02 GT. I am planning on buying a car, so i am planning on figuring out what to buy. Def getting 4.10 Gears installed first.:D :rlaugh:
