Hi,
Have a '92 2.3L mustang LX

Timing belt snapped on me today .. got the new timing belt plus i got the other 2 belts as they was starting to look old.

I got the pulleys off, the timing belt cover off .. and removed the old belt

Not being 100% technical when it comes to cars i'll explin the prob as best i can

there are the 3 main cogs inside the timing cover with what looks like the tensioner... now the top and bottom cogs have the line up markings on them and i have aligned them up the other one has a marking on the cog but nowhere to line up to .... errm HELP

O - top cam

o-tension O - this one

O

How do i find out how to align this ??? ?
does it even need an alignment .... what is it for ??

Thanks

A dumb guy who can do the work but isn't sure how !!

It's the aux. shaft gear. It's best to take off the distributor cap and set that gear where you want the number one cylinder tower on the distributor to sit by watching the rotor turn.

Crovax, pay closer attention. :) The car's a 92 which means it's a DIS car, no distributor.

This makes life easy for you remixer. The only pulleys that need to line up are the crank pulley and the cam pulley. The auxiliary shaft(the one down and off to the right does nothing but drive the oil pump in your motor.

O.k. great !!
Thanks for both replies .. the distributor did confuse me though !!

O.k. so the aux doesn't need to line up ...
Better to use the chalk lines someone left there by someone else
or is there a better way to line these ?

Thanks

Find the factory stuff. The cam lines up on a pointer on the plastic cover bottom right of the pulley. When I've done the timing belt on these motors I try to line the crank up on the TDC mark on the belt cover before I tear it down. The fun part about the crank is that the timing mark is on the pulley so once you remove it you've got nothing. I suppose a smart person could mark the crank snout or timing gear and the block once they pull the crank pulley off, but I've never been that smart to date so I still do it the hard way. :) Once you've got the belt back on and the tensioner set, spin the motor by hand a couple of revolutions and see if you're still lined up. Sometimes releasing the tensioner throws it off.

:bang: :bang: O.k. now i guess the nest dumb ass question is .. how the F*&K are you supposed to get the belt around the bottom pulley (crank) ... it seems to be blocked off by a lip on the pulley .. i noticed there is a small slit above the pulley which looks like you might feed the belt through there... but i'm lost !

you have to remove the shutter wheel and the DIS sensor, then that big washer comes off and you can slide the belt right on. getting the center crank bolt out can sometime be a huge pain though, just to warn you. Also there IS a pointer on the cranks timing gear so you can use that to line everything up.

there is a small notch in the crank seal plate at 11 o'clock and a triangleinside a circle stamped into the crank gear line those two up and youll be at TDC with the crank, also there is a line,(looks like it was done with a chisle) in the belt washer, that also lines up with the notch in the seal plate to let ya know your at TDC

o.k. i got the bottom crank bolt off and now i can't remove the pulley that has the ring on it for the crank sensor .... is there a way to do this without calling someone out to come 30 miles with a puller for me ?

:bang: :bang:

its a slip fit, it could have some rust in there, soak it with some Deep creep or PB Blaster and knock around it (IE NOT beat the hell out of) with a brass hammer and work it back and forth

if ya want give me a call

Thanks to all who helped on this !!!!

:hail2: :hail2: :hail2:

it looks like i'm off 1 notch on the top cam to the TC down below...
however i was losing light fast and had to make do with what i had !!
it's running weaker than usual .. but it runs
and it'll get me to work an back for the next 5 days
and i'll tackle it all again next weekend.. but now i have all the tools and
everythings loosened up .. it shouldn't take me an hour or so !

THANKS TO ALL AGAIN

:nice: :nice: :nice: :nice: :nice: :nice:

O.k. guys the mustang is DEAD !!!

**** i took it to work yesterday (monday) and it was great
i was driving home and noticed the oil pressure gauge doing weird things.. before i knew it i was chuggin like a train .,..

OIL PUMP FAILURE !!!!!

Man i'm gutted

Anyone want the shell of a 92 mustang 2.3 LX ??
if you're near Sarasota Florida and wanna make an offer then bring it on !

hey man, dont jump right to the pump, the 2.3 has a fairly common problem, you might have sheared the gear at the dizzy/aux shaft.

just pull the dummy shaft out and check the gear, if all is good there, then go to the pump.

I have sheared that gear more than once.....
give me a call again if ya want and Ill walk ya through it

Hmmm !!!!

That might be worth looking into, i did take it to a service place who said they checked it out ... but as i said .. it was chuggin REAL Loud by the time i got to a place i could stop safely .. i've probably done more damage internally than just the pump/gear now ..

So it's going to the dogs... will post pics later !

hey man,

its a quick check......alsso didnt ya tell me ya was about a tooth off to??? ya might of jumed another tooth
