My babe got hurt! Will add Street Scene kit/RKS Hood

I have been so busy and am just now posting pics. Last Wednesday, I had this young girl cut in front of me to make a left hand turn from the third lane over. Nothing I could do to stop it but just cringe as I crashed into her. I have attached some pics.

Got a couple of questions I hope that everyone can answer. Since they are going to be replacing the front facia and hood, I was think about the Street Scenes kit and a Saleen hood. Is there a lot of prep work the body shop could charge me to get these on? What has everyone else been paying to get these kits on?

Can anyone chime in if you have the Street Scense Kit (front facia, side skirts, rear valence) and/or the RKSport California Dream Hood. The body shop is wanting $1900 to prep, paint and install. :( Does this sound high? What did it cost some of you to get the kits and hoods on. Any help would be appreciated.

:bs: there is no way in hell that it will cost $1900 to install and paint these parts. is this including the purchase price? shops add like 25% mark-up for parts. take in your own parts to save the extra dough. installation and painting of a bumper and hood would be less than $1000 for sure. i am not sure of the labor rates in your area, or the specific labor times for these parts, but I WOULD NOT SPEND THAT MUCH!! if you want it cheaper, drive it to omaha, ne and i will do it for you for $500 painted and installed. (i am an ASE certified master technician) for the extra $1400, you can drive here, take a few days off, and still have extra money.

Bigcat, thanks for your input. This doesn't include the purchase of the parts. Have you worked with any of these products before. I know that some pieces can be very poor quality and a lot of prep work can be required. Are you familar with these or know people that have already got them on. I know one of the members that had his car at Sema this year, but I don't think he ever discussed costs.

i have not had any experience with these parts. many of the parts now are urethane, and require very little working to make them fit. many fiberglass parts suck and are poor fitting. from the posts i have seen, the street scene kits have not had any problems. i believe that the RK is urethane as well, but on their site, i remember a pic of the kit installed with a hood too. the fender to hood gap was very poor on one side.

heres that pic....

the 3rd one from the left on the top row, since i cant link the pic direct for some reason.

Bigcat,

I was incorrect on their first number $1900. It was suppose to be $1628.61, which is still way to high.

Here is their breakdown of hours:

Front Bumper fitment: 4.3 hrs
Front Bumper Refinish: 6.2 hrs
Hood fitment: 3.1 hrs
Hood refinish: 6.2 hrs
Side Skirts fitment: 6 hrs
Side Skirts refinish: 4 hrs
Rear Bumper attachment fitment: 3 hrs
Rear Bumper attachment refinish: 2 hrs

Total hrs: 34.7 (Can I say ridiculous)

those refinish times are very high. wish i could get paid like that. i dont know where they came up with fitment times if they have not seen the parts yet. i mean come on they want almost a complete day to fit the side skirts????? i would look elsewhere for a better deal. i hope for that price they are completely buffing the panels to a show car appearance with NO texture to the paint at all. a day and a half to paint the bumper and hood? you can do that in one morning. actually, you could paint all of it in one morning. even if they were going to color sand and polish, it still would not take more than one day of paint time. but shops are there to make money. most refinish times are crazy anyway. painters make a killing compared to a bodyman. the painter gets the gravy, while the bodyman busts his butt to make due with the time given. if i get a chance, i will see what it pays to paint the stock pieces for a comparison.

my estimating book says 1.2 to replace the hood and 1.1 to R&I the bumper (2.3 to overhaul) so that time is ok.

refinish times (not sure if this includes clear coat or not, i dont have the book here now) for the stock parts is:
2.8 for the bumper
2.9 hood outside
1.4 hood inside

the rockers pay .5 each for replacement and 1.0 refinsh each
for the entire rear bumper (for comparison, even though you are only doing the lower part), it is 2.6 refinish and 1.0 R&I

i cant justify their times without seeing the parts in person. they want double to paint the "non-stock" bumper???? its slightly bigger, you wouldnt even notice the difference when you are prepping and spraying the parts. i would find a different shop, unless this is the best shop around. you want good quality work, but you should not have to pay an extra premium for their work.

Bigcat,

You've been a big help. I went to look at the car today to see the progress of the collision work. I talked them and told them that I was going to give them the benifit of the doubt doing a estimate without see the parts. I ordered the Street Scense body kit and Saleen Hood and both will be shipped to their body shop. I told them after inspecting these parts to give me a final estimate that should be substantially lower then the other estimate or I will take my car elsewhere. We'll see what happens.

Damn, I have a quote from a local guy for my California Dream hood for a couple hundred bucks plus a little extra for a nice finish on the bottom of the hood and depending on how much extra work goes into fitting the hood right. So, I would say they are charging WAY TOO MUCH, lol.
