Engine knocking.. Help please !!!!!!

First off… This is from personal experience. About six month ago I had a ticking noise and it drove me nuts. It too was coming from the back of the motor and sounded like a bearing. I only had the noise when the motor was reving from 1,800 to 2,800 rpm and with light to no load.

I jacked up the car and had my buddy rev the motor so that it would make the ticking noise. I used a long screwdriver (be very careful of moving parts) and held it up to places like the valve cover bolts and various spots on the block. All had very faint ticking noises. When I was under the car (with two jack stands duh) I used the screwdriver and put it up to the block (oil pan bolt) and on the passenger side and held the end of the screw drive up to my ear and it made the ticking noise very loud. And that is when I knew it was something bad like a rod bearing.

I pulled the motor out the next weekend and sure enough it was the no 8-rod bearing.
(All eight cylinders had the original crosshatch on them… 88,000 miles later):D
.
Word of warning, don’t use the screwdriver only idiots use those. Go to sears or someplace like that and get an automotive stethoscope.

Maybe I'm just an idiot....but 90% of engine work can actually be done without just needing a new engine right? Let me guess...the dealer only charges an upcharge of 82% on the engine and will maybe clock 592 hours building it?

I'm not sure what would be your problem, definetely not as experienced as some around here, but it makes sense to check for something loose, and get it to another dealer or mechanic to diagnose. Never trust a dealer who says "new engine" without actually telling you why and what is wrong with the old one.

Update

Well, I took the car to an SVT dealership. I told them that an oil flush had been done to the car already and it did not fix the issue. I guess it is just a waiting game to se what they say. If they say the same thing then I would bet it is pretty bad. The first dealership did a compression check and said cylinder 1 and 6 were bad..... well, when I went to pick the car up he said that the cylinder head was bad and the back right side of the engine had the bad valve.... Okaaayyy... Those are two different answers. So we will see what the second dealership says. I am 218.00 in the hole now... I bet it will be more, much more. I'll keep you updated. I looked at the Seafoam web site... Do I just pour this stuff in my oil? Do I leave it in there till the next oil change? How is this used? Thanks everyone, you are very helpful.

lets not rehash a 6 month old heated debate... the locktite thing is dead leave it dead.. we did use it on a few trucks and we got the plugs out.. had too chase the holes too get plugs back in LOL but i got them out.. agian

I DO NOT RECOMEND THE USE OF LOCKTITE BY ANY MEMBER OF THIS BOARD.. but i still will continue too play with it and test it on my own.. if i ruin a cylinder head it's not the end of the world for me..

i have never had a locktite plug loosen up.. but i have seen thread damage from it..

so for you guys i recomend..

1. antiseize and proper tourqe and retighten as they loosen (if they do)

2. or just put them in the way ford does.. with no crap on them at all.. works fine and i have gotten them out with 150k plus miles on them..

we have more problems with iron head fords seizing the plugs... never had a problem with a aluminum head ford and a plug seizing.. the old 5.8 is known too have the plugs seize too the head.. and that a iron head..

maybe in the early days of aluminum heads there was seizing problems due too two different metals reacting over time.. but this has LONG been worked out..

WHAT? What thread? I dont even remember a thread like that, and im sure if you look it up I wasnt involded. I may have posted, but dont remember the thread at all.
I was just getting a jab it cuz he jump on my quote so hard...could have said "who said anything about locktight?". But anyways I was still right (noone was wrong HAHA), no locktight. Anyone can, but I never will in any heads.
