First off… This is from personal experience. About six month ago I had a ticking noise and it drove me nuts. It too was coming from the back of the motor and sounded like a bearing. I only had the noise when the motor was reving from 1,800 to 2,800 rpm and with light to no load.
I jacked up the car and had my buddy rev the motor so that it would make the ticking noise. I used a long screwdriver (be very careful of moving parts) and held it up to places like the valve cover bolts and various spots on the block. All had very faint ticking noises. When I was under the car (with two jack stands duh) I used the screwdriver and put it up to the block (oil pan bolt) and on the passenger side and held the end of the screw drive up to my ear and it made the ticking noise very loud. And that is when I knew it was something bad like a rod bearing.
I pulled the motor out the next weekend and sure enough it was the no 8-rod bearing.
(All eight cylinders had the original crosshatch on them… 88,000 miles later)
.
Word of warning, don’t use the screwdriver only idiots use those. Go to sears or someplace like that and get an automotive stethoscope.
