im going to have to pull the trans aren't I :(

hey, you're young!..not that hard anyway, and besides if your going to own one of these cars you better get used to changing clutches!...its kinda fun too...get some friends over and git er done! you'll sleep better once you get this problem solved.

may be a shot in the dark, but if you pull the flywheel make sure its for a 351. My car when it originally was restored had a 351 put in by the original owner, and he had put the BOSS 302 flywheel back in which caused some pretty wild vibration. Just something to think about.

Good luck.

the boss 302 and the 351 are both 28 oz imbalance so there should not have been that big of a difference. sounds like you actually had a 50 oz imbalance flywheel in there. either that or at some point the engine was rebuilt and the entire rotating assembly was balanced together as a unit, that could throw off the balance if it was just installed on another engine.

I'm still wondering if this problem is related to your other post about the grey smoke at idle. If you are running overly rich and/or poorly timed you could have cylinders dropping off in a certain RPM range. You never came to a conclusion as to what the cause of the smoke was yet never mentioned the vibration then the same as you haven't mentioned the smoke in this thread. Is it better or worse when the vibration happens and do you get black sooty marks behind the exhaust in the driveway?

well the motor is vibing, but its still pulling very hard. I have no problems with the way the motor runs at all, I just think the carb is mismatched to the motor which is causing the smoking.

There are no sooty marks on the driveway, and the smoke resembles the smoke a newer car has when driven without warming up during the winter. Doesn't smell like anything really...

The car definately has a large solid roller cam in it and It doesn't pull hard till ~4500 or so, and it has a 600cfm vacum secondary edelbrock on it. When I get around to changing the carb I think the smoking should stop.

im pretty convinced that its gotta be a problem with either the balancer or flywheel. I'm heading out to work on it now, and hopefully its the balancer and not the flywheel.

I pulled the stock harmonic balancer and it was wasted. The outer ring was rotated and pushed back towards the timing cover.

I got another harmonic balancer for it and replaced it, but still have the same problem! I looked at the crank pulley and it seems like it was a 4 groove pulley, and they cut off two of the end pullies to make it lighter I guess. On the inside next to the bolt holes you can see where they cut the extra pullies off with a torch and there is some slag. I wouldn't think it would cause the amount of vibration I am getting though.

If I pull the trans, is it possible without pulling the bellhousing at the same time? If I can pull the trans and leave the bellhousing attached to the motor, then remove that separately I'd be able to get them out without having to pull the headers.

Also I do have an aftermarket bellhousing.

so i just took it out for another long test drive, and it seems that when im driving when the vibes are the greatest on the highway, if I take the car out of gear and rev it while I'm at speed I hear this clunking noise kinda coming from the trans tunnel. Could this be a loose flywheel?

I was having a prob kinda like this, except it didnt start till i got off the gas, i sprayed the carb down with a can of cleaner, and put a bottle of fule system cleaner in it and it helped with the vibe. alot of it went away but i still get juat a little vibe after 60mph its wierd....

is the balancer you replaced the other with new? It it is old, it may be bad as well.
Yes, you can pull the trans out without removint the bellhousing. That is a good time to check for round out, or rather if the center of the flywheel is at the center of the bellhousing. While you are looking, check the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft for out of roundness. It might give you some insight as to the lineup of the transmission.
Other things to consider are a bad input shaft bearing in the front of the transmission, causing the input shaft to be able to vibrate with a resulting shifter shake...
Good luck.
