I'm not a regular poster, and not even a Ford person really, but I watched last night's edition of "MOTORWEEK" with Jon Davis and crew and was amazed at how much they fawned over the car.
Craig Singhoff is a big muscle/Mustang fan so he had to love it, but the text of the review sounded about as positive as ANY review I've ever seen on the show.
They seemed to think the solid axle wasn't 'crude' at all - it does have a panhard rod and a differential link to eliminate axle hop. They had absolutely nothing bad to say about the axle. Frankly, I think it's fine too.
Acceleration numbers were only for 0-60mph (five seconds flat) and the 3 valve engine has boosted power to be more than competitive with other domestic V8s.
They raved over handling too, but it was in the looks department that the MOTORWEEK crew really flipped. Davis ALWAYS SOUNDS LIKE HE'S YELLING, but in this case he really did seem amped up with enthusiasm in describing the true to 1960s side scoops, trisegment taillights and fastback roof.
I like the way he ended the review by talking about how this could be the kind of car that could end the SUV monoculture - a nice zesty taste of sport and fun in comparison to the dour, wallowing (when not tipping over) SUV.
The Verdict: Ford has an out of the park grand slam with the new Mustang.
I'm kind of partial to the new Charger, but for $5000 less, I'd be crazy to pass up the (much better looking/honest to god 2 door) Mustang GT.
Think about it, the hot to trot Neon SRT is $22,000 - for not much more you can have an honest to God supercar
Thank you FoMoCo.
