The SN65 project car

  • Sponsors (?)

settle down grasshopper, bob is on vacation......

Looking back at the old photos really gives me a sense of accomplishment. I can see where a lot of people figured that we would never get this project finished. It really did look rough back then. :)

I would like to thank you for following our humble project over the past year or so. Your comments and suggestions have proven to be priceless. When we were feeling down, you encouraged us. When we were going to make a mistake, you put us on the right path. When we started to lose focus, you brought us back in line.

Happy new year. We all wish you and yours the best over the next year.

Bob

PS: I will be out of town for the next week. Wayne will continue to nibble away at the hood, fenders, etc... I will start posting updates again the week of Jan 9th.

I also saw the magazine coverage by Mustang and Fords. Not too many cars get magazine coverage as a project. If you get a half-page in mid project then you'll probably get a few pages when its completed. Kind of funny how it shared magazines with Boyd Coddington's yellow 'stang after Bob mentioned that many people compare the SN65 to it. Congratulations

Speaking for myself...I am sick of the hero worship for some of the famous builders like Chip and Boyd. That yellow fastback is nothing special if you ask me. Custom wheels and air cleaner, other than that it is a collection of bolt-ons. Nicely done but for the price I see it like the turnkey kits from Sanderson.

I like Chip, at least the one I see on the TV, he works on the cars himself and has a vision. Boyd on the other hand is a dumb ars:notnice: . Bob now there is a modern legend SN65 rules!:flag: :hail2:

Hi All,

Yesterday we got a lot done in regard to assembling the doors, but we still have a way to go. There is only one thing that is holding us up right now. We need to find the material used to bond the stainless steel trim pieces to the drivers and passenger side glass. The material appears to be some type of fiber impregnated with some sort of rubberized material.

Any Clues???

Here are some photos of the wing window assembly and the door handles mounted to the car. You will note that we have left the door lock black with a silver center section. We were originally going to make it all silver, but decided that the black fit in well with the "black" exposed rubber trim around the door handles.

With that said, I have a little announcement....

THE SN65 WILL BE ON V8TV TONIGHT!!!

If you have the Dish Network, it can be seen on the Men's Channel. The show should air on Wednesdays at 10:30 PM eastern, 9:30 PM Central and 8:30 PM Pacific time.

For those who are not fortunate to have access to the Dish Network, you will be able to get a copy of the show directly from V8TV sometime after the show airs.

Know the stuff you mean, no idea what it's called or where you get it. I'm re-doing all of those on mine too, 1/4 Vents and rear 1/4 windows included ('65 coupe).

I gave up trying to find the right stuff so I ended up using black Sikaflex. Once the old stuff's removed, there's about a matchstick's gap on either side between the glass and the window capping. So I used matchsticks as spacers, taped up the windows to minimise the cleanup required and went to work squeezing in the Sikaflex.

It's time consuming and messy, but it gets the job done if you can't locate the correct stuff.

Hi OZ,

Thanks for the heads up. I am going to talk to a couple of auto glass shops today and see if they have any recommendations.

I bought some for my side windows from a local glass shop. It is a rubbery like tape material.

Its like double sided tape isn't it? Kinda gummy; stretches when pulled? Being in the window business (last job 4 yrs ago) its used between the glass and aluminum frame, then caulking is used to watertight this application.

Anyway, we called it Butyl tape. Like 66 said, try a glass house. It comes in different thicknesses and widths usually in 50' rolls.

I believe they call it glass setting tape. I had some in the door re seal
kit for my old Chevy Truck. Came from chevyduty.com, but I'll bet a good
glass shop should have it.

FYI, the stuff I used required some oil to make it expand and clamp the
glass. Several years later it's drying out and getting loose again.
Something more modern and permanent might be better.

Keep up the excellent work!:nice:

Bob,

I watched the Friday night showing of V8TV and they really did a good job showing the Mustang. It was pretty awesome that for a 30 minute show they spent 15 minutes on the SN65 project. I can't wait to see the next show when the car is finished. Keep up the good work.

Hi All,

We have been moving along quite well. We have the fenders, hood and headlight buckets mounted. We have spent a lot of time re-aligning the doors, fenders hood, etc... to give us the most consistent gaps. We have all the door internals complete save the installation of the glass. The "glass guy" will be showing up on Saturday and spending the entire day installing the front and rear glass along with the trim.

Today we will be checking all the fluids and bleeding the breaks. We will also be rerouting the clutch cable and installing a new firewall adjuster and aluminum quadrant. The factory items don't give us the proper throughout adjustment on the CenterForce clutch. We will be installing the front valance and working up the front bumper mounting brackets.

After we get the bumpers installed and properly aligned, we will be sending them out to be re-chromed. The quality of the chrome on the re-pro items just sucks. There are all these tiny little pin pricks that reflect when the light hits them just so.

On another note, I talked with the powers that be at the Detroit Autoramma. They tell me that our project sounds interesting, but it probably will not be considered for the "Ridler" award. We figured as much, but the reason he gave me was a little surprising. The fellow said that it the award emphasizes "creativity, engineering and workmanship" He felt that our project might fall short on the "engineering" side. I believe that he really did not understand the scope of the project. He probably believes that we just cut two cars apart and welded them together. From his point of view, we really did not "create" or "engineer" anything. All we did was graft two cars together. Nothing that requires any engineering. It is not as if we designed the car from scratch....

I believe that this is the way the project comes across to those who are not aware of everything involved. Just like Kevin from V8TV. What he thought he was going to see and what he actually saw were two different things. People have seen way to many photos of cars where the actual car is nowhere near as nice as the photo. It always brings a smile to my face when people stop by the shop for a peek. everyone (so far) has been totally blown away. They may just be trying to be nice, but I prefer to believe that they are really taken by the project.

That said, for us to have any hope at the Autoramma we have to stop publishing photos of the car. The car actually looks like a car right now and they have rather firm requirements that the car not be published in its finished form.

So, what do you all think. Should I keep publishing the as built shots, or stop for the off hand possibility of Ridler consideration?

They are clearly morons and don't know what they are talking about. How could anyone say such things. Just like that moron Grip that bashed your car in the beginning at VM. Some people are just plain stupid and some are just jealous that they could never do what you did. I would keep posting pics and do what makes you happy. I say f*** Ridler. They are not worthy of you car. If your car is as nice as it looks which I know it is they will come running to you.

Well, the Autorama is March 3, 4 & 5. That's about 7 weeks out. It's not going to hurt my feelings if you don't publish any finished photos until then, heck I've waited this long for you to finish it, whats a few more weeks? Point I'm trying to make is, it's your car, do as you want. I'm one of those guys that think the devil is in the details, I love the detailing over the flash. If I can ever get my '65 Mustang coupe and my '63 Fairlane nostalgia drag car done, they won't gain any front row looks at a car show, they'll look really clean and rather sedate, but if you spend some time looking at them, it'll be hard to discern some of the work as to whether it's original or not to most people, other things will make some people wonder if it was an option. In any case it will be very clean and look 'right'. That's what I appreciate so much about what your doing.
