Ok, so before anyone says it, I did a search !

What I'm wondering is this. Is there a junkyard way of seting up a TBI system on my Mustang so that I can get around 650CFM or more ? I understand that the SBC TBI's weren't rated passed 300CFM or so and that the BBC TBI's weren't over 600CFM. The only engine I've ever heard of Ford running TBI on is this I6 Australian DOHC motor but I'd be hard pressed to find that setup in the LA area and it provably wouldn't push anywhere neer the amount of CFM I need.

The idea here is that I want to switch over to something that improves my drivability over my carb which I will need to replace anyways because I got bad advice from someone I use to trust. Since I gota spend 400 or so dollars on a new/proper carb for my setup I started thinking TBI would be the way to go. I don't want to get into the hole MAF vs TBI argument PLEASE. What I'm looking for is an upgrade for the same relative price range.

I'm not trying to be cheap. Please don't missunderstand me. I don't do things the CHEAP way. I'm trying to find an AFFORDABLE solution. Being in college puts a damper on the amount of time I have to make money and making money really hinders my left over free time. The idea here is to find a quality junkyard alternative that I can backyard finance and maybe save some money on.

A TBI setup would involve a computer, EFI fuel pump, etc. Not really an easy swap. If you are going through all the effort, you might as well use EFI hardware from a 5.0

You could always do like me and use a megasquirt ECU to control it, but you won't find any junkyard TBI's that you'll like. I ended up with a 4bbl holley TBI.

70NE, I have read all 3 of your posts about your setup. Interesting stuff. I don't really want to have an EFI intake. I HATE the way it looks under the hood. I'm helping a friend do an EFI swap in his 68 right now. The donnor is out of a 90 Mustang he bought. I don't really wana deal with all that. TBI seems to be a better solution for me because I want to retain the classic look of the carb under the hood. Its kind of hard to notice the TBI setups at first glance, especially if its well done.

What I figure is that I need to buy a new carb anyways when I put my heads/cam into my motor and drop that back in the car. If I'm going to spend the money any ways then why not spend a few extra bucks and go TBI ? If its not going to cost TOO much more then its worth it. If this is going to cost a lot then why bother with it ?

fastaggie, do you know the CFM on that Mark VII ?

Where do you have that information from? It has allways been my understanding that those are 670cfm like the 2-barrel Holley Pro-Jection, measured at the SAME 1.5Hg pressure drop as 4-barrels carburators. They have big 2" throttles, or am I wrong here? :)

And the smallblock TBI have 1.625 throttles and flow 480cfm.....or?

Remember that they don`t have a venturi, making a restriction in the bore like a carburator. I know a lot of people says that the flow are measured at 3.0Hg like a 2-barrel carburator, but all literature I have seen says 1.5Hg....and see this: www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/showthread.php?s=&threadid=194984&highlight=cfm

I think the cheapest system would be an used bbc Tbi body or an 670 Pro-Jection and Megasquit as the brain. If you are dealing with a lot of hp, the 2 injectors can have problems flowing enough fuel. Some people running with raised fuelpressure on the system (a lot) without any problems. Or you could use a 4-barrel Pro-Jection throttle body. :)

no offense Rusty, but if you can't figure out an archaic device like a carburetor, what makes you think you can figure out EFI? Stick with a carb, educate yourself, they are just as driveable as a cobbled together TBI system for sure.

None taken, but then again I have never really TRIED to learn about carbs. Its not that I don't have the ability to, I'm just trying to see if I can upgrade without spending too much extra cash.
