smog pump question

Do you mean you took the hose off and it's just pumping air into the engine bay or the hose is hanging? Either way the only problem will be that you will hear some noise when you rev up the engine. If you still have the hose connected, I would take it off so it doesn't hang down and get caught on something.

That is a good point by 5.0Nos. Not having run with the line disco'd, I figured the TAB/TAD would muffle noise. If removing the hose at the pump, I think I would rig up a funky filter to keep debris and try and keep moisture out of the pump, since that will wipe it out fast (I have been in an AIR pump saga with the '94).

Its still underneath the car,but out of the way.Yeah, you can hear it,sounds like an exhaust leak..The check engine lite comes on for a few seconds while its still cold. But goes away when its warmed up.

Second the ripping out of the smog pump "plumbing". Just get a shorter belt and bypass the smog pump and disconnect all the vacuum hoses, plugging what needs to be, then take the smog pump out. Is about a 10 minute job including jacking up and down the car. Plus a tiny weight reduction:D

Nope!! Too me its all about having a 100% stock vehicle with everything working!! Plus having a smog pump will help at inspection time!! The fact that Im shooting for low to mid 13's makes having a stock looking 5.0 worth the while:nice:

and I have cats!!

Don't know too much about that one. But...

You can have a muffler shop drill a hole in the pipe and weld a tube to the side to connect your smog tube. You will probably have to cut your smog tube and then use silicone hose to connect it to you pipe.

Yeah Im gonna get it done.

The first two cats are referred to as Pre-cats.

The air injection from the A.I.R. pump does help keep the cats going, as well as in the catalyzation process (air doesnt magically appear in there).

Now I will say that I have yet to find definitive info about aftermarket cats. It seems to me that some are made more for oxygen depleted environments and might be less likely to deteriorate and/or allow full catalyzation.

Willys, I am not sure about your last comment. For those who are confused, the AIR pump flow is directed at the back of the heads to help light off the cats when the motor is cold. So if one is going to delete a flowpath, the one to the heads is the one to delete. I know you know that - I am just confused about the order of comments on this thread.

no they wont. Its mainly for when the car first starts up!!
And to prove it the factory H pipe has 4 cats, only 2 of them are connected to the smog pump!!

I wasn't speaking from personal experience there .... I just gathered that information from other forum members (who said their catalytic converters clogged after removing the smog pump).

JT, you seem to have a good amount of experience with the smog stuff, lol. What's your take on this?

theres nothing disconnected. The smog pump is pumping air through the hose still. My exhaust guy has the set up for the hose to the cats from a y pipe and says it will work.He just has to do some drilling and welding. They are magnaflow cats, they are a good cats.If there was a clogging problem if no smog pump was present, then they would have made hook ups for the cats!! No?
