Did our cars (at least 90 models) come with a clearcoat from the factory? I'm confused with myn as I figured it would have a clearcoat, but as much red thats on my polishing pad and hands when I get through theres no way it can have one. 150% sure the car has never been painted.

I know that they did from 90 up. I am the second owner of mine and the clear coat was peeling when I bought it. Of course, nowadays, it don't peel. Hell, you can't even see the Night Kreeper in the dark.

When my father bought my car new, he WANTED a black LX Hatch, but they informed him that was the ONLY color in 1990 that did NOT come with a clear coat, so he got the Titanium. :nice: Hope that helps.

Whats the deal with myn then? Whenever I get through with myn I think I just killed someone because my hands are red. Red is all over my pads, and lots of it. Hell theres even some red on my wash mitt!? Would a clearcoated finish do this?

This may not be totally accurate, but here is what I noticed. Paints that have no metallic and are base colors did not have clear coat. No clear on Red, black, white, yellow. If its got metal flake in the paint like my reef blue, it has a clear coat. I know what your saying about the red. I detailed a 93 red LX and had to buff it to get it to shine again. Red on the pad:D

I think there may be truth to this. My 1990 LX is has the red factory paint and doesn't have clear coat; neither does my Black 1991 GT as far as I can tell.

hmmm my 87 has never been painted, and i can see the clearcoat peeling off of the back bumper (coincidentally the only place that still has some on it) polishing turns my rags red

med. cabernet red is the color

if that isn't clearcoat peeling off then ill eat my transmission

My 90 does not have a clearcoat on it. The hood and front fenders have a clear that is peeling but I believe it might have been in an accident and painted the front portion of the car. The vin number on the underside of the hood is painted over which leads me to believe so. The rest of my paint was oxidized so I used some rubbing compound and took most of it off. Definately no clear coat.

It depends on where and when the car was made. Ford tried to get all the cars in clear coat, but some of the factorys that made the mustang were not upgraded for the clearing process in time for 1990. I have seen some 91 cars with out clear, and some with. As others have stated the base colors where the last to see the clear process.

I found this out when I was in auto body school and was wanting the repaint my ground effectsand a few other pieces. The instructor's info said that it had clear, but after sanding on the hood some we easily saw that was NOTthe case, so he did some digging and found out from someone at ford. So it depend on when and were in was built.

Hmm, what if a car was repainted? Do they usually put clear coat on the cars? My 2nd 5.0 has been re-painted and i want to buff the paint but dont know if it's had clear or not, is there anyway to tell? For what its worth its metallic.

Can't tell from the picts way to far away to know if it is cleared or not. It does look a different color than my 90 red LX. If you have a rock chip or two check real close you might be able to see the clear layer. Here is a pict of my red LX with non clear factory paint. The ground effects were painted with PPG single stage it is not a clear cloat paint either.

Thats my color right there. It even has the little gray stripe like I got. Just doesn't look as dull as mine does. What is it?

Well the car has alot of elbow grease in it mainly. If you buff it and it has been outside for several years, or as old as it is by now you will have red come off on the buffing pad. If it has been buffed several times before becarefull about buffing a whole lot. If it hasn't been buffed before do a three stage buffing systems. Meguiars has all the grits to do it right available at Pepboy and the such. I would recomend looking at a place call Griots, they sell good high-end waxes and buffing stuff. Good Luck.

P.S. Mine also stays inside all the time except for show and cruises, and I only have 50,000 miles on mine.
