Speedometer/Odometer Problem...STILL!!

Well, finally got the TwEECer up and running.. My speedometer and both ododmeters (and only those things) have not been working for about 2 months now. I checked the VSS by running the TwEECer.. The TwEECer DOES disply the speed, so it's NOT the speedo gear or the speedsenor (VSS)
I looked at the little gears in the cluster and it's not those either. What's the next thing to check?[/I][/B]

Joe mentioned one of the cables that connects to the cluster. There are 2-----one each in the upper corners. I have had the cluster out a couple of times to install the white faced gauges...I dont think I messed anything up back there, but you never know.


Any thoughts?

It is probably the speed sensor on the trans. You shouldn't have a cable driven speedo..

It cant be the ENTIRE cluster, b/c everything else works...Which side cable is it (driver or pass)?

its listed as on the black connector, not sure what side tho

It would seem to me the pcm gets data from the sensor on the trans.

Since the Tweecer interface is on the pcm service port.

Would not that mean something is not right in the instrument cluster or between the pcm and the cluster.

That's what I inferred in my opening line....since we thought (previous thread) that the VSS was most likely....That's why I ran the TwEECer today.


By that, I ruled out the signal TO the EEC. The gears in the cluster are fine...Gotta be a loose or bad cable? Just dont know which to check.

do you have any blown bulbs, the bulbs (check engine etc.) are in the loop of some of the elctrical connections..... For instance, there is a certain light in the cluster if it blows the alt. won't charge(farfetched i know, but i saw it happen at the auto-electric place, he had to show me cause i wouldn't believe him(brothers car))


i would look for something that is not, or keeping from completing the circuit...Good luck with this man, i know it has to be bothering you...

Believe it or not, IM not TOO upset about, just more Since it's not my DD driver anymore, I dont get "as" stressed when something goes wrong.

I dont "think" it's a bulb...everything else seems to be working. Right now Im just collecting ideas here and a couple other boards until I get back to it.

I have some basic troubleshooting, but it is all guestimate on my part. I am also with "S351RAnimal" in that I thought our speedos were electronic.
If you are saying you have calbes that you think drive the speedo put the car on jack stands(safety first).
Unplug the cable and put the car in drive, with foot on brake release slightly and watch for rotation of the inner drive mechanism.
Should not take long to figure out which one it is.

He knows the speedo is electrical..... I don't think he was tyring to say it wasn't...... merely that the sensor is sending out a signal....hence the tweever reference...

I guess IM using cable in reference to the harness that connects from down in the dash to the back of the cluster. .. There are 2 of them....When I say "cable" im referring to one of the wires that connects back there.. Joe said one that runs the speedometer/odom goes bad in our cars...Im just trying to figure out which one and/or what to check.

Well, I finally got to take the bezel apart again...Everything there looks fine.

The 2 harnesses that connect to the cluster joint together after they leave the cluster and are taped together...I doubt anything in there is loose. ON that plastic piece on the back of the cluster that has the electronics, I traced the metal contacts that say "speedo" to the appropriate connector on the on the harness....everything seems to be ok there.

IM at my whit's ends!

I guess you could always use an ohm meter or continuity checker to see if any of the wires or connections have gone open between the trans and cluster.

This is exactly what I would do. You're gonna have to get in there with a voltmeter and ohm out the connections. Electrical problems are always the biggest pain... it's got to be a physical issue. If the computer is seeing input, then you will need to trace the wires from the VSS to the cluster and find the open along that path.

check your fuses.....it happened to me also, but i cant remember off my head which one it is.....just start pulling them until you find the blown one.....
