so I mark the base of the distributer and the rotor. I pulled it out, replaced the pick-up coil, reinstalled it putting the rotor back on its mark and lining the base with its mark on the block. Start it up, sounds great, starts right up. Then I take it for a drive and it has 0 power. I bring it back and spin the distributer a little to one side and it gets aliitle more power but still bogs.

Point being does the timing need to be pretty close or will alittle off make a huge difference? Cause my car is running ok but I have lost a bunch of power.

Um yeah, you should toss a light on it. A handful of degrees one way or another (sounds like you might have your timing retarded) can make a decent difference.

IMHO no matter how anal someone marks the thing, during the R/R, it will not end up exactly where you had it. The width of a marker mark is enough to be off a couple degrees.

Good luck.

i agree hissin i have a timing light and a few monthe ago i had the idea to mark 10*tdc-16*tdc on the dist. shaft for track purposes so i could adjust without light saving time but the degrees were to close to mark 10* lined up on the same line as 16*maybe 10 thousandths or less difference in placement so it didnt work so i adjust with light everytime thats the only way to properly set timing.also ensure you know the proper wat to adjust timing including spout removal.

yes....definatly your timing....
even if you do mark the bottom of the dist. it is still possible to turn the gear or shaft that goes through it and your timing will be off when you go to put it back in..

check your timing...

theres a wire harness exiting passenger side fender beside air filter box the wire harness hooks into the maf. sensor on that wire harness in that area there it will be a gray square box pluged into a plugin at the end of a wire harness. if you still have factory air filter box you may have to remove it to find it.

I replaced it for rough Idle, random stalling and hard starting. I may need to replace the Ignition module too. It idles alot better since the new Pickup coil. That gear was a little tougher to get back on than people make it out to be though.

I try to depict it fairly accurately in the posts where I talk about it. It goes real easy for some and not for others (just luck).

Cool, a fellow Tucsonan. :nice:

I got mine at pepboys just because they carry Borgwarner parts. I got a timing light today and adjusted my distributer. It was only 10 degrees out. It was dead smack on the 0 mark. So it runs like a champ once again and Idles great. Thanks for the help.
