EFI fuel pump question?

The Stang dyed on me the other day. The fuel was not getting to the engine; however I could feel the fuel pump working. When it is working properly the noise is extremely LOUD; when the fuel is moving threw the fuel line. I have never head anything like it before, the fuel pump sounds normal, however when it suck the fuel out its extremely loud. It has been like that sense day one. I had at least a quarter of a tank of gas, and to the touch the fuel pump was hot. It did start working after a 10 minute wait.

It has a T-Rex external fuel pump, check out the picture to see if I mounted correctly.

I think you would be better off if you changed the location of that pump. Efi pumps are good at pushing not sucking. Since your pump is mounted quite a bit higher than the pickup location it is going to have to work really hard to get fuel.

Couple that with a quarter of tank of fuel and you have just experienced the efi fuel pump problem. Now the question becomes how to resolve it.

1) Baffled tank
2) Low pressure and high pressure pumps with a surge tank
3) Baffled tank with in-tank pump
4) Fuel cell with foam and a sump

Those are the basic solutions each has there own benefits and drawbacks. Which one is right for you really depends on the level of complexity and price that you are willing to pay.

Personally I am doing a baffled tank and inline external pump. I have different fuel requirements than most efi conversions and the in-tank pumps don't have enough juice to feed my beast.

If my car was just an efi conversion I would go with baffled in-tank pump due to the fact that it a proven design. Millions of production cars prove that it is a reliable design.

I looks like you are having the pump pull thru the filter. That might be your problem, I think you would be better off having the pump push thru the filter. Or it may just be that your filter is nearly plugged and the pump is having these problems because of that.

I agree with Hertz, and the pump shouldn't be loud. Mine is silent when it runs. The only loud pumps I have ever heard died soon after.

If that is pre-filter then it is fine as is. Every inline pump I have used required a prefilter otherwise they won't warranty them. If it is a 10 micron or less filter then it would definately contribute to the problem of feeding the pump.

Ya, I know it’s hard to explain... It sounds like a vibration sound; I thought it was due to the fuel pump pushing the fuel threw smaller orifices... It could be from the aluminum fuel line that lacks some type of rubber support holding the fuel line... Hell I don't know anymore... All I know that it is annoying as hell, especially when I'm at a light or parked...

One thing that might make the pump loud is the way it is mounted. Mine is quiet but it floats in a foam sleeve within a sheet mount. (It's a Lincoln pump, just as it came from the Ford dealer.) Those 2 u-bolts you're using would make that a pretty solid mount, thereby carrying vibration to the sheet metal. Also, I mounted mine lower - about at the midline of the fuel tank.

Just some ideas.
